Hi Friends,
Not long ago I was experimenting with the Inkscape Effect called Fractalize, thinking it would fractalize a selected path, object or whole image. Turns out it doesn't do that, and I went searching for a program to make fractal art. I found many, even several free (even one open source). So I thought I'd post some fractal art I've made.
These were all made using Sterling2. A little surfing around that website will reveal tons more (20+ pages, made by its co-author).
Barrel Cactus LIttle Droid
Simba Nala
Laceweed Hoooo
Spinner Wheatstalks
Spidey Into the Mystic Fractal
These are all images that the program creates. Users find them by zooming in and out, and choosing pre-set color schemes. But users can also edit the parameters of the formulas, as well as the colors, although I haven't ventured into these areas yet.
Other programs I've found do much less by default, and need much more input and expertise by the user. They will take longer to learn. Yeah, it seems I've discovered a new passion -- I'm even going to set up a little website with the space my ISP gives me, to display my best.
But most exciting of all -- I can't wait to use these fractals in combination with Inkscape! Even though raster graphics is probably better suited to handle fractals, I just really love Inkscape, and think plenty of cool effects could be achieved, especially with the various Pattern-related features.
Anyway, for those who love symmetry and color -- Enjoy

Re: some fractal art
Fractals are wonderful and so much fun to explore. I don't think I've touched a fractal generator for 8 years. I think I had used Sterling and Ultra Fractal at the time. I'm curious to see how fast my computer can generate those images now
I look forward to seeing how you mix fractals with Inkscape.

wow those are wonderful!
All of them could be made into wallpapers!
Spidey is a fav as a wallpaper. Spinner caught my eye the first, it reminds me of Twin Peaks.

Yes, a lot of the images I've saved towards the goal of webpages, websites, various webpage elements. Hey, maybe I'll set up a little site of freeware web elements! Hey, if I converted some to SVG's, would they be appropriate for the Open Clipart LIbrary? Or is it for pure, original SVG's?
Thanks for your comments

If it were just a bitmap embedded into an SVG, then I wouldn't think it qualifies as "clipart". But I don't make the rules, so I could be wrong. Of course, if you're using trace bitmap on fractals then I would think that would be ok.
Re: some fractal art
Now that's some pretty cool stuff.
I think you could easily play with Inkscape & the generator to make some neat things.

So brynn, do you know the software which fractalize an object or path? because when I see sterling2, it seems that it can't do it either......(correct me if I am wrong).
actually I want to achieve something like this (see the background in comment #1 and #4): http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3379. Thank you in advance for your answer.

Welcome to the forum!
No Sterling2 creates true mathematical fractal images. I haven't really found any kind of fractal program that will take a path or object, and repeat it in a fractal-like pattern, as in the images you referenced. I know that GIMP has some kind of fractal tool, but I haven't (surprisingly) tried it. But since the images you referenced are from a GIMP forum, I would assume that GIMP isn't doing what you want either? Although I might guess that those images were indeed made with GIMP. Have you tried The GIMP? It's free and open source, just like Inkscape, except GIMP is raster graphics and Inkscape is vector graphics.
There was a member here, quite some time ago, who kept posting images and calling them fractals. They weren't true fractals, but instead were objects drawn with Inkscape, which he simply arranged in a fractal-like pattern. He disagreed with me when I said they weren't true fractals, because they weren't originated with mathematical formulas. He would have been perfectly welcome to continue posting his images here, but he took exception to me calling them not true fractals, and left. But I do seem to recall that he either wrote, or posted a link to instructions for what he was doing.
Let me see if I can find that topic and/or link, because it sounds like that might be what you want to do (if GIMP doesn't). Please understand that I don't see anything wrong with these images. I just think they are more of a fractal or fractal-like pattern than a true fractal. I'll be right back after I search out that link
Edit
Actually I forgot about Inkscape's LPE VonKoch effect (Path menu > Path Effects Editor > VonKoch). It does take a path or object drawn with Inkscape, and repeat it in a true fractal pattern. But I've found it to be extremely limited. It really only does one pattern. Here's the manual info http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... nKoch.html You might learn how to do some different things with it, from the instructions, I'm not sure. I haven't studied it yet.
Here's that other topic: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5540 In it, is a link to that member's "tutorial".

Hello Brynn, thanx for your long reply! Actually the person who posted that question in that gimp forum was me . I am more experienced in GIMP, that's why I try with GIMP first. but because I can't get what I want, I try inkscape.
thanx for your vonkoch effect and the "tutorial", I will check them! have a nice day!

Re: some fractal art
I really like those images. I've played around with fractal art on some extremely simplistic programs, but I haven't gone into it any deeper. Your images are making me think I should look into it more again. I respect that you're looking into making your images freeware, they could definitely be turned into some interesting web elements.
