Runboy: 3D

Postby macouno » Fri Jul 24, 2009 5:31 am

Hey folks,

Mato (a cool guy from Japan), is working on a special version of Blender 3D. In this special version you can use SVG files as textures on your 3D models. SO, since I'm a Blender user, and wanted this for ages, I'm doing some experiments.

So here's a little scene I'm working on (the models are 3D, all the colours are svg):

I'm really quite new to inkscape, though not to 3d.... if anyone wants to have a go, I can make the files available so all you'd have to do is replace the svg files in a directory, and we can rerender... Could be fun!

Looks like your experiment came out pretty well. Hopefully Mato's modification to the textures can get added to the offical version of Blender at some point :)

Thanks guys... it's still very WIP... I want to add lots more crazy stuff.

I'm pretty sure this version won't make it into the official Blender release. It uses QT, which is a huge library... and I'm afraid the Blender folk won't want the program to get 5 times bigger (from 10 to 50mb) just to support svg. I think the real solution would be for svg in blender to use an external system. Apparently Blender on Mac can already use Quicktime to use pdf files as image textures. I did hear something about inkscape maybe being developed to support that sort of thing (an api)? Because that would be excellent! Then maybe if you have both Blender and Inkscape installed, they could really cooperate.

In a way that's also why I'm doing this experiment... maybe I can get a coder to get on this and write in support in Blender the proper way.

Oh... wait... here's a fun comparison.

This is a closeup render with PNG textures in Blender, exported from inkscape (2048 x 2048 pixels):

And this is a closeup with svg textures:

Good stuff... and you can see why I'm excited!

Whoa... it's quiet here, nobody posted a WIP since I was last here?

Well then... I've got some progress... worked on some hills, and added some clouds

it looks really cool :D

Only crit I can think of is that the gradient on the trees shouldn't go so dark on the bottom of the trees, it stands out too much :).

Very nice !
The possibility to use SVG textures in lender is new to me.
I love both Blender and Inkscape and I am very interested in this new development.

Do you have a link to some blender build with this feature ?

macouno do any of the developers of Blender know Mato is working on svg compatibility?

I use Inkscape to create textures that get placed onto Blender models, mostly using tga or dds bitmap formats. I think many Blender users would find svg compatibility very useful, I hope more people know this is possible!
