Barcode with Sub Path Stitching

Postby MavisPuford » Sat Apr 19, 2008 9:15 am

Just a quickie. Here's how you can make a fake barcode in inkscape(yeah yeah, I know there is an effect in Inkscape that does this already. Oh well):

-Make a rectangle.
-Convert it to a path. (I set the stroke width to 5 for a 380x250 pixel barcode and also set the cap to "square cap")
-Remove both the left and right sides so only the top and bottom are remaining.
-With the object selected, Go to Path -> Path Effects.
-Add Stitch Sub-Paths. (I had to reverse the bottom line of the square horizontally because the stitches were crossed)
-Change the amount of paths to 50 or whatever you want.
-Make the Start Spacing Variance AND End Spacing Variance values the same. (2.00)
-Add some numbers with white backgrounds on the bottom and you've got a barcode! You might also want to go to the document properties and change the background to white so it will export all nice.

Sorry if the instructions aren't detailed enough, I'm in a hurry to go somewhere right now.

Nice idea!

Instead of cutting up a rectangle, you can use the pen tool :tool_pen: to create a line, duplicate it (Ctrl-D), move it down, then combine them (Ctrl-+).

Scuse me, i don't understand, why try to do a barcode that way. In 0.46 you have the Effects barcode.

Actually yemanja, you know what, I've never seen that effect! Hahahaha! Thanks for pointing that out. Thats funny. Well, you can do it either way then I guess. This tutorial is pretty much a waste of time now lol. I thought it was neat anyway. :P

@kelan - Yeah I was gonna suggest that too.
