SVG Viewer Extension for Windows Explorer

Postby nihon94 » Wed Aug 28, 2013 8:18 pm

I have been trying to find out how could I view svg files thumbnail. Today I found a website and installed SVG Viewer Extension for Windows Explorer. Now I can view thumbnails of my Inkscape svg files easily.
Here is a website link
http://code.google.com/p/svg-explorer-extension/downloads/list

I wanted to share this with others, but I do not know if this is the right place or not.

LOL, I just came as fast as I could to post exactly the same!

So far it's working pretty well. It fails to render some files, dunno why, but it's better than nothing for sure.

I was searching around vectex where I'm guessing similar problem was caused by
the difference between AGG svg and Qt svg-s as they said.

Hi,
I am really happy if it works.
Actually I wanted something like this to view my Inkscape files instead opening one by one.
When I found this I thought why not share with others.

I can't get the above extension to register - BUT - I did find the Renesis Player, which actually works the same way, and allows Windows XP to show you thumbnails of SVG files. Awesome!

Renesis player is so outdated. I'm surprised you found a copy at all! But does work on XP and even Window 7 -- although it won't show all SVG images. Unfortunately, it's developer disappeared years ago (long before this topic was ever posted) never to be seen again. But now that MS has gotten on board (displaying SVG) future Win operating systems will probably display the images natively.

Well, Renesis is a ton better than I had before this - which was absolutely nothing. Sure, Irfanview and Xnview do have the capability for addons to allow you to view SVG thumbs within them, but for viewing SVG thumbs natively in XP, this is the ONLY file I've found that has worked.

Hi,
Ive downloaded this extension and I'm not sure it did anything. When I open files through Inkscape I am only seeing the icon rather than the thumbnail. I just want to double check that this extension will fix the issue through inkscape. I am able to see the thumbnails if I go directly to the folder where the files are but not if I am trying to open the file directly through Inkscape. Thank you :)

Hi, When I open Inkscape and from File OPEN I can browse and see the image I am little bit confused should I say I can see Icon or thumbnail. Please refer screen shot by using given url link below.

file called From Inkscape.jpg (88.9 KB)
https://www.sendspace.com/file/y6dbf3

Also as you said if I go directly to the Inkscape folder I can also see too.
What I understood from your above posting correct me if I am wrong, you could not see any image when you open through Inkscap File OPEN unless you open that document in the Inkscape right?
If that is the case you better add information which Operating system you are using so others may help you too.

Thank you

If you're referring to Renesis, then Brynn says that it's outdated, and it might not work on current Windows versions anymore.
It's purpose is to show a preview in the Explorer, not in Inkscape's File -> Open dialog, as far as I understand. For that, you can make a check at the small checkbox in the bottom left of that dialog.
Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!

Well, I tried dssee on my win8 64, and that sorta works in windoze explorer... it does take a command line delete of current iconcache files. Not great for any newbie.

And while having preview icons in explorer is quite nice, the preview pane in Inkscape - File:Open, only shows the Inkscape icon (but the file requester shows previews), lol.

That did not work after all...

I notice the preview in the shared file has a png file. Do the svg files show in preview also?

This is the view I get when selecting an svg file to preview in the file>open dialog:

Select_file_to_open_2017-01-19_22-37-25.png (100.1 KiB) Viewed 16158 times

As you can see, even the filename only has the first letter.
