Color changes after I select another color for the last item

Postby vieya » Mon Jan 04, 2010 2:46 pm

Okay I am not gonna lie I'm a newbie. So as I'm figuring out my other problem. I've found this new one. whenever I change the color the last thing I did that item changes color as well. Now this is good if I'm trying to change say a part of it on purpose. But usually if I left it that color I don't want to change it when I'm trying to change a color to create the next stroke. I'm hoping there is a way to fix this. It's really frustrating to have it keep changing the colors of the last thing I drew.

I'm not sure I understand what you're doing, and may not be able to help you. But I'll try. Basically, to change the color of something, that something, whether it be an object fill, stroke, or path, must be selected. So if something is changing color that you don't intend to change color, then it must be selected. You just need to be sure that only the thing you want to change is selected.

UNLESS, it's a duplicated gradient or clone. If you've duplicated a gradient, and later change that gradient, then everything that uses that same duplicated gradient will also change. There's a setting you can change in Inkscape Preferences, so that changes to one duplicated gradient doesn't affect others. Likewise, if you've cloned something and you change the original, then all the clones will also change. To fix that, you simply need to break the clones' link to each other.

If this is all a little too vague, it's because your description of the problem is fairly vague. If you still can't figure it out, please reply and tell us what tool you're using, and your exact steps to duplicate the problem. Then we can give you step-by-step instructions ;)

I think I understand what you mean by what I selected will change color to whatever I choose. But I believe the last drawn item is always selected by default. I don't ever actually select the stroke itself. or last drawing itself. but as I decide to choose the color of the next stroke than it changes the color of the last stroke I with the new color I've selected. I don't know if this is still too vague but do tell if it is.

i think I can sum it up simply for you by saying :
You can't choose the colour of something before it exists in your drawing.
You should rethink your workflow so that you get used to drawing and then colouring.
The inkscape preferences allow you to choose, for each tool, what the default colour will be when you draw your object and before you assign it a colour. (You can also choose, in preferences, to use the fill and stroke of the last object for your next object.)
Your mind is what you think it is.

AFAICT it is the Selection issue, after you create an object it is selected. Before drawing a new object and before choosing the next color simply remember to hit the Esc button, or click on an empty part of drawing.

You can choose the color for the next object by clicking on the color chips when no object is selected. You can see what the currently active colors are in the top right corner.
