Edit saved file

Postby jenn8670 » Wed May 11, 2016 1:21 am

I created a logo in Inkscape, and want to make a few changes, however when I open up the file I cannot make changes. I tried to ungroup but that isn't working. I feel very stupid right now as I am sure it is something simple, but I am a newbie so hopefully you will understand. I fumbled my way through to create the logo using YouTube, which was extremely helpful.

I have attached my logo. I am wanting to make the paw print black. I then want to create the same logo changing the orange to blue so that I can see which looks better on my background

You need to attach the svg, not a bitmap.

If you saved as an SVG, you should have no problem. If you only saved/exported a bitmap, than you should just start over.

Most programs have a "native" file format, Inkscape's is SVG.... it stores the layers, fonts, filters, etc. (Illustrator saves as .ai, Gimp saves as .xcf, Corel saves as .cdr, etc.)

Using the native format allows easy editing and saving, then saving copies as distribution/display formats.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Tyler, Thank you for your reply!

I started over and created a new logo. It is saved in png format. I am trying to send the file to a company doing a vehicle wrap for me. He said I need it in a vector file (which I thought Inkscape was vector files), as well a .ai or .esp file. Is there a place I can go for instructions or video?

Jenn

Inkscape is a vector editor. And SVG is a vector format. But an SVG file can contain both vector and raster content (by importing a raster image). PNG is a raster format. And even though it might be inside an SVG file, or even though you exported it from Inkscape, that doesn't make it vector.

If you drew the logo entirely all in Inkscape, and you saved an SVG file, then you should have the kind of file the company needs.

It's possible to export a PNG from the Inkscape canvas, without saving an SVG file. So I think that's what tyler might have been thinking, that prompted his reply.

But if you made the logo from scratch, all inside Inkscape, and you saved that as an SVG file, that should be what the company needs.

Every now and then, we hear about a printing company that has never heard of Inkscape. But if they don't know SVG is a vector format....well, I hope they don't charge much. (haha)

Thank you!

I did remake the logo in Inkscape and sent them the svg file. I really like the logo that I was able to make, much better then the one I posted! I have not heard from them regarding the new file. I am in the quoting stage so I can still compare if there are any charges!!

Hopefully all is good!

I suggest using Inkscape SVG format as only a construction/editing file, and saving copies as plain-svg and pdf for release to printshops and other service bureaus. Almost all printshops can easily use pdf.
