Three-color braid in a circle?
OK, I am about to throw my computer out the window here. I have created a section of a three-colored braid. I draw a big circle, I convert stroke to path, I press CTRL+SHIFT+7 and add a Pattern Along Path. I copy my object to the clipboard. I reselect the path and click the "Link path to clipboard" button... and I get NOTHING like what I am looking for.
What am I doing wrong? This should be an easy effect; making the braid section should have been the hard part!
(see attached)

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
Hmm we had a braided spiral topic somewhere...
Oh yes you started it.
Well since then I cannot look up the original source file, had overwritten the one in the dropbox by accident.
Anyway, gained some more skills and better start from scratch.
So.
General notes:
Pattern along path lpe doesn't work with groups.
It uses plain simple paths, gradient fills won't get bent, nor groups or masked/clipped groups.
The pattern by default is horizontal.

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
Hmm. That's a shame. It seems like something that people would want to do.
Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
The bend lpe works with groups and similar in nature to the pattern along path lpe but it doesn't repeat the base object.
Other than that limitation the braid pattern's repeating need care for matching colours.
Maybe this can be handy for a good start.

Using scatter with clones and live editing the pattern ?
Applying the colors when finished ?

Scatter does not work. Tried it with a two segment pattern. The division is wrong so it does not work with the three colors.
A four segment pattern does not work with Scatter because of lack of distortion.
Pap LPE does the trick, but involves a bit of work:
after you applied the LPE, convert to paths, 'Break apart' and then recolor manually.

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
Tried the Pap Extension with a group but that leaves a gap...not exactly sure why... probably because of pattern length.

I cannot duplicate your results. Can you be more simplistic?

What do you mean simplistic ?
Which part does seem to be the problem ?

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
I think I am creating the initial pattern piece wrong - the one I flip and duplicate to make four copies of. I am also not sure what you mean by 'combine' - do you mean Group the objects?
See attached for my humble mistakes.

The Pap LP does not work with groups, so you need to find a way to make the segments into one path (and later break apart again).
Boolean Operation: Combine
Menu: Path -> Combine (CTRL + K)

Ah! That's much better!
I still have gaps between the elements, but can play around with that. Thank you SO much for your advice!

Yeah, you need to play with the 'Spacing'.
The problem with this effect is that Inkscape has three ways for a pattern along path functionality, that all work differently.
Scatter doesnt distort the pattern. The LPE does not work with groups. The Pap extension has no live editing because it has no cloning option.
Thats why its so tricky.

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
I wanted to see how well Illustrator does this (with a grouped pattern), so i created a scatter brush, but it has to be seamless as a requirement.
The result was not very great.
That inspired me to try the following in Inkscape:
applied a seamless pattern with the Pap extension, then break everything apart and tile clone individual segments to allow for the rendering gap tweak. (Lazur, what have you done, lol)

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
You could also try Repeated, Stretched option, to deal with the space. It might introduce too much distortion. But worth a try.
Nice work Esper!

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
I got it to work with a six-piece pattern.
Reducing the spacing and tangential spacing brought it all together.

Great that it worked out for you !
Are you planning to do something with it, or is it just for fun/knowledge ?

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
It was a combination of "How do I do this?" and "Here's a braided circle graphic if you need it" for a group I'm a member of.
Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
Nice job everyone!
Just a note that the pattern in 4PurpleMom.png is shifted and the colours don't match as in Life_edit.png.

Re: Three-color braid in a circle?
Thanks.
I tried something different.
Made the same 4-segment pattern as above, grouped and tiled into a circle, with that pattern roughly touching (there is no distortion/bending with tiled clones, so it doesnt "fit" at first).
Next i live edited everything into the shape you see now.
