How do I create circular labels

Postby jeniduck » Sat Aug 11, 2012 3:40 am

HI there, I'm new to Inkscape and not a pro graphic artist - I'm switching over from Publisher to make labels and I can't for the life of me figure out how to create a circular document so I can print off circular labels. It feels like this should be super easy and basic but I can't figure it out and cant find it in FAQs...any tips?
Thanks :-)

No software (that I'm aware of) can create a circular document. Your circular label must be on a rectangular page, so in Inkscape you would create the same sized rectangular page. You could then draw a circle within that document as a guide.

Hi, welcome to the forum :).

If I understand your question correctly, you could accomplish something like that using the following steps:

1.) Create a circle with the Ellipse tool
2.) Convert it to a Path (with the menu Path → Object to Path, or Shift+Ctrl+C)
3.) Create some text
4.) Select the text object, and the circle
5.) From the menu Text, choose Put on Path.

Is that what you're looking for?

Think you have to do it the oldschool way

Measure the placement of your "circleshaped" print. And plot the info to a a4 in
You click on the unit-edge of the canvas an drag a guide-marker-thingey(not english native, so no idea whats its called) onto the desired places.
You can change the cm/inch units in preferences.

As Ailurus said, Text on Path would solve one line of text but if you have more text you could also try one of these:

- Create concentric circles where distances from each other fits the text height, combine them all (Ctrl+K) and then Put text on Path. Most probably you`ll need to adjust or correct a few things but the result is quite nice. It works with arcs as well.
or...
- Use Spiral tool, create and adjust like concentric circles but bare in mind that text would start from the center of the spiral. To avoid that - adjust the spiral, convert it into Path and then Reverse the path direction (from Path menu). After that text would start from the outer endpoint.
also...
There is also Flow into frame text option. Text would remain horizontal but would fill the desired shape. If your label is a sticker then you`ll need to create the outer and inner circle, "cut" the inner part /Difference from Path menu/ and then apply Flow into frame.

Hope these would help.
:tool_zoom: <<< click! - but, those with a cheaper tickets should go this way >>> :!:

Are you also trying to type text on a circle or arc? if so, there's more steps, you'd also have to create a circle or arc, convert it to a path, type the text, then use the 'put text of path' option, then do the object to path to separate them, but, you'd have circular text as well as a circular label. I'm wondering if Word in Win 7 has circular labels in their list, if so, it'd be easier to print them in Word. (you could type the text here, convert to a png or jpeg, then place it on the label in another program to print it).

Just to put in my 2 cents, I don't think it's clear whether the circular labels have text or not. We could assume that something called a label should have text, I guess. I don't know if jeniduck has a sheet full of circular stickers that he/she wants to print something on, or has some other procedure in mind. But if it's a sheet full of stickers, I agree with nesDK that you'd have to duplicate the content and space it out properly to fit the sheet full of circular stickers, to print.

But we probably need some more info, before we can offer additional help, imo :D

Hi there, thanks for all these suggestions, what a helpful bunch :-) I want to create circular labels with text on that can be printed onto sheets of blank stickers - stickers are 40mm diameter so there are 24/sheet. What seems to work so far is working inside a circle drawn on the document then saving this as a png selection only, then inserting this into a word document with and Avery sticker template then printing. I'd hoped there was a shorter method but this will do. I'm managing to get the text to fit to path, though it always wants to go clockwise - any tips for getting it to fit anti-clockwise?

Aahh, yes. Reverse the path that you're putting the text on. Path menu > Reverse. Also make sure that you center the text (in Text and Font dialog, or Text tool control bar) so that it's centered on the path.

I'm glad you got it to work :D
