Hey Guys I'm New :)

Postby sglider12 » Thu Dec 11, 2008 12:52 pm

I couldn't find an intro thread, so I hope this will do. Please move if it isn't!
Well hey I'm new here, and new to Inkscape as well. I worked with Illustrator for a long while, then my love for open-source came along and I found The Gimp. I've been working with Gimp for a couple years now and am actually a moderator over at the Gimper.net forums. I also run a Gimp tutorial blog, SGlider12's Blog, that' pretty successful.

Well, I've always liked vector graphics and needed an alternative to Illustrator seeing as I can't afford it, and found Inkscape. I'm actually trying to get into it more and what better way than to join a forum, right? Well, hope to learn a few things here!

Welcome sglider!
I'm actually trying to get into it more and what better way than to join a forum, right? Well, hope to learn a few things here!

No better way, imo. I joined this forum a little over a year ago, and could never have learned as much on my own, as I've learned here.

I have to say this is a rather an "all business" kind of forum. Not a lot of personal or social interaction, sadly. But who knows, maybe the right personalities just haven't joined yet?

I'm kind of a perpetual newbie with Inkscape. I have absolutely no graphic arts or even just art background and just started to learn it for fun....to nurture my inner artist, I guess, lol  So to me, Inkscape is buggy and crashes a lot. But more experienced users don't seem to have much of a problem with this. I'm not quite sure why, maybe it's just one's perspective. In any case, with your experience, I'm sure you'll do just fine :D

I hope you enjoy your time here.
All best.

Welcome! glad you found us :D
Nice looking blog you have there. Look forward to seeing what you can do with inkscape once you get up to speed.
If you have Qs ask away, we'll do our best to help, 2 resources you may find invaluable tho if you havent already found em are
the Inkscape Guide

and

brynm, wrt the buggyness, if I find repeatable bugs in my workflow I do 3 things:
1) Make sure its in the tracker
2) Dig in the code a bit and try and fix it (not something everyones gonna do obviously...)
3) See if theres an easy workround.

if your repeatedly crashing it in the same way, please make sure you do at least #1, we cant fix what we dont know is wrong...

Off topic:
Hi Sim - don't want to hijack sglider's intro, but I do report everything I can duplicate or have confirmed. But for the most part, if you don't know what causes the crash, they don't seem to take much interest. And I just don't know enough about the inner workings of the software to figure that out. BUT I do my best :D

If its repeatable and the steps to reproduce it are there, we will take interest at some point...
We can be fairly lax about chasing things down mid dev cycle, but we always do a bug hunt/purge as part of the release process, at which point crash bugs get the highest priority. mid cycle the code is still in a fair bit of flux, so unless its a biggie thats affecting lots of folk we often wait to see what gets shaken out in the dev work.
(I'm a dev by the way if you havent realised)
