How to vectorize to curves?

Postby Grzdyllo » Mon Jun 30, 2008 11:30 pm

Hello

I'm a newbie in Incscape community so please excuse me if my question is obvious but I spend a lot of time searching for solution and havent found. My English isn't excellent so please excuse mistakes, hope you understand my problem...

I have some bitmaps where are schemes (lines more or less after scanning process), after some tweaking they can be easy recognized by Incscape during "Vectirize bitmap" - edge detection. But it's the point where problem starts - as a result I have shapes which are paths and that's not what I need. Is there any way to get as a result simple lines (mix of straight or Bezier curves, which for example thickness could be changed as normal stroked path)? Or maybe there is a way to convert this shape (polygon - which have area) into simple lines (which havent any area itself)?

If you can't still understand what i'm trying to achieve look at this tutorial: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... eLogo.html where in point 5 "Trace the bitmap mountain to form a new path" where author uses the Freehand Tool to create a new path. I would like to have the same result but generate this line automatically not to draw it manually.

I hope somebody experieced could easy help me with my problem.I would be very grateful becouse I have a lot of schemes to convert to vectors and i have no idea how to manage it :(

There's no way to do this automatically in Inkscape at present.

I've heard that AutoTrace can do this sort of tracing, but I haven't tried it and I don't know how well it works.

Thanks, I was digging the net since my post and I just found the same but that AutoTrace doesn't work on my machine (or simply I dont's know how to operate this). During my search I found also program LineTracer which seems to work fine but it produces EPS file which Inkscape don't recognize :/

Maybe somebody could look at that problem from other point of view - is there some way to convert automatically in Incscape any shape to line (or curve of corse) going on the outer edges of that shape? (for example how to convert normal filled rectangle (polygon) into rectangle constructed by 4 lines?)

If you convert the EPS file to PDF using Ghostscript's ps2pdf, then you should be able to open the PDF with Inkscape.
