Line drawing to a 3D print

Postby Chros » Thu Mar 24, 2016 3:31 pm

Hi all, OK I'm new to this. I have made a simple line drawing of a tree trunk. Saved as .svg, imported to Tinkercad and am not getting the result I want. All the open spaces are filled in. When I type a name in a script font and save the same way, Tinkercad displays it perfectly. If I could post some pics would that help? :?: Cheers

You could embed images here, if they are uploaded somewhere (use IMG button). Or you could give us the link if you uploaded somewhere else. (For future reference, you can attach images in Help with Inkscape board.)

I'm not familiar with that program, but some other members might be. I could lead you through some trial and error, and probably eventually we could make it work. But hopefully someone else will know what to do, without so much trouble.

Edit
What do you mean by "3D print"? Oh, it's eventually going to a 3d printer?

You might try converting your strokes to paths.

Beyond that, feel free to post the link to the instructable you mention.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

A 3d print needs of course a virtual 3d model like a stl-file (stereolithography).
Talking of a bracelet it could be look like so?

Hi tylerdurden and Polygon, thanks for the replies, tried the paths bit, no go! Went to instuctables and found a conversion - works well to the point of loading as an .stl but will not print. Says it has multiple layers but cannot be seen in the layer file. Polygon, that looks great how was the original drawing done and what programme was used to convert it.

At this point, we're doing a lot of guessing about what you want to do. Could you please be specific?

Where will you be sending this file -- to what kind of machine or what software? Does that machine or software have any documentation? What does that documentation tell you about what kind of file it needs to do its job? It's possible that some of us know what you need, but even they are still guessing, until you tell us.

Once we know what you need, we'll be able to tell you how to do it :)

Thanks bryn, I have made a line drawing of a tree trunk (hope it came through on earlier post). I wish to make a 3d print of this drawing. My printer is a Cocoon Create with a 200 x 200 x 200 capacity. The software is Cura 18.03. I normally make my models in Tinkercad, save as gcode and open in Cura for printing. The picture sent by Polygon would be a good example. (How do you insert a picture - OK so I'm a bit thick).
Does this make sense? What else should I include?
Cheers

Wow - this printer works with OBJ and Collada files as well - this is quite uncommon.
I´m using a Mac-only 3d app called Cheetah3d.
I attached a zip compressed file to your liking.
Have fun.

Thank you Polygon, have loaded the printer with gcode, .stl..obj. The printer does not accept the .stl - it will load the .obj but then ignores it. (These were all extentions when trying to print the bracelet). Starting to think the Cura software may be the problem. Not using a mac so the Cheetah won't work. Is the design of the bracelet taken from my tree4 image or am I imagining things? If so I need a lot more in the way of 3d printing instruction.
I am downloading the files on to a mini sd card and loading the card directly into the printer.
The Cocoon site states it will accept stl. obj. etc but seems only to print from gcode!! any and all ideas greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Did you ever get something you made by yourself 3d printed then?
I don´t think OBJ or Collada will help you any further.
Yes I took the drawing you uploaded here.
Steps in essence were:
Make path one solid compound path
Load the SVG into 3d app
Extrude the spline to give it thickness
Use a wrap modifier to bend the model around ca 300°
Export to STL.

Inkscape does not have the ability to create 3D drawings. Only simulated 3D, by using shadows and shading and blurs and maybe gradients. So Inkscape might be good to start a project. But it sounds like you might eventually need to finish in a 3D program, like Blender.

That is a rather spectacular bracelet. Yes, I have made some inserts for a couple of old light fittings. (Morris 8 side lights). I made them in tinkercad. However I am unable to make my tree in that programme. (Other smarter people may be able to). My original drawing was made in Xara and saved as an .svg. It would seem I am missing the 'path' and 'extrude' knowledge. May try Blender as brynn proposed. Will keep trying to learn the process. Thanks.

Looks like tinkercad can import vector files:

I'd consider printing the tree flat though, then heat bending it around a mandrel... printing it as a cuff bracelet could be a big project in removing the supports.
Have a nice day.

The tree is supposed to printed flat, Polygon just went one better and created the bracelet. I did try to print the bracelet but ended up with spaghetti. maybe the gcode needs tweaking. will keep playing.
Cheers
