Inkscape .48
PPC Mac os 10.5.8
For the first hour I thought my hand was just not steady enough.
But now I realize this is an Inkscape problem.
PROBLEM
1.I select the move/translate tool
2. Select the object I want to move
3. click and drag it to a new position
4. release the mouse button
5. The object JUMPS to a slightly different position then where I put it
I have tried restarting x11 and inkscape and turning snapping on and off and snapping to grid on and off
NOTHING WORKS!!!!
If I can not use the mouse to move an object to exactly where I want it then I can not get anything done with inkscape.
At first What I really want to do is use snapping to snap the node of an ellipse to the edge of a triangle.
Which worked perfectly UNTIL I LET GO OF THE MOUSE BUTTON and then it jumped 4 or 5 pixels in the oposite direction of where I dropped it!!!!!
Objects don't move to where I put them!

Are these objects lines you created with the connector tool? Or other special objects like 3d boxes, linked offsets or clones rather than regular shapes and paths?
Could you attach an Inkscape SVG file with such an object that can't be repositioned to allow others to investigate and provide either links to known issues in the bug tracker or possibly workarounds/solutions?
Re: Objects don't move to where I put them!
The objects were ellipses that I made with the ellipse tool.
After converting the ellipses into paths they are now able to be moved without jumping out of place.

Ellipses can be moved (with or without snapping) normally [1]. They are different than paths in that they store transforms (scale, rotate, skew) differently (which sometimes can cause problems), but at the moment I am clueless what exactly could trigger the odd behavior you described.
[1] tested with Inkscape 0.47 and 0.48 on OS X 10.5.8 (Intel)

What kind of snap settings did you use (i.e. 'what snaps' and which corresponding snap targets)? Did you see (or do you remember) the snap indicator message that is displayed whenever a dragged object snaps to a target? Did you release it while or right after the snap indicator told it would snap 'Quadrant point to path'?
