Created in Inkscape 0.48 on Mac.

A star was extruded (extension/generate from path/extrude) and then eggbot extension TWIST to get the fine detail. You are never quite sure what you are going to get but this turned out well and can be recolored.

I never really thought about using the eggbot extension and related stuff, but I guess you don't actually have to put designs on eggs. I might have to look into eggbot

Thanks Brynn, Carolyn on the Inlscape Cutting Design forum is always challenging us with her great tutorials and last week she did both Extrude and Twist. I just took both tutorials to heart and did this design.
