Hi,

I have to make a printable EPS file (for the first time in my life) using CMYK and this is where I'm stuck.
I tried to use Scribus, but after the conversion the colours looked very bad (desaturated), so now I want to use Gimp to do this.
How can I do this? (I convert the SVG file to TIF in Gimp, then the TIF file in EPS in Inkscape? ) . And how do I swich the RGB colours to CMYK in Gimp?

I have to get this done in few days, everything I've read so far made me more confused, so I really really need your help.

You'd have to ask a GIMP forum about that. I don't even know if GIMP has CMYK support. But I do know that converting a TIF to EPS in Inkscape will lose any CMYK (if you can even open a TIF in Inkscape -- I don't think you can, you'd have to import). However, you might be able to do it with Inkscape. Have you seen this extension: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5943? I'm not sure, but I think it outputs a PDF. So you'd have to find a way to convert the PDF to EPS without losing the CMYK. Unless PDF might be acceptable?

I suggest that you ask this question on the Scribus forum. They have a lot of experience with colour conversion and preparation for print. They can probably also tell you why the colours didn't look great after conversion.

I know there are Inkscape forum members here who are on the Scribus forum as well, but I think that the Scribus community seems to be more geared towards print than the Inkscape community.

Is there a bulletin board style forum (like this forum) for Scribus? I think it was 2 to 3 years ago when I tried to use Scribus, but there was not this kind of forum -- it was only IRC channel at that time.

Though many power users are on both. I found the Scribus community very helpful, but I do know you had a poor experience. I know it takes just one sh*tty list member to really put you off. That said, the Scribus community (though I find them helpful and supportive) is not quite the same family atmosphere as the Inkscape forum. Some members can be quite blunt at times and so pro-linux as to look down on windows users. Oh yeah, don't get them started on copyright or patents.

That sounds awful - they're not. It is just a very small community with some very strong opinions. However, they do know a lot about page layout, print, and typographic design. And they're willing to share that knowledge. I learned a lot just lurking.

Oh that's awesome. I do think Scribus has, or at the time I tried it, had a lot of potential. I just found too many rough edges for a new user to handle. I do expect that it's been improved, and will continue to be. I'm sure it has every bit as much potential as Inkscape to be a great tool!

This is my very first post, but this topic caught my eye because I use GIMP. CMYK is not supported in Gimp.
