Inscape fails to open saved svg file

Postby beastop » Sun Jul 26, 2015 9:13 pm

Hi All,

I've recently downloaded Inkscape on my Mac (10.10.3) but can't open the previously saved svg file. If I double click on the file icon, XQuarz (2.7.7) opens and the Document Properties window opens - but not the document itself. (The same happens using 'Open With'.) Inkscape launches OK with a new doc window, but if I try to open my saved file from Inscape I get a message window with: bash-3.2$ but the doc still won't open. The XQuartz Window tab says the file is open, but when I select the file name I get the same message. Should I re-install Inskcape?
Thanks

Do you happen to use a dual-screen setup, or sometimes work with a second monitor attached? Based on some of the described symptoms (the one about the Inkscape document window being listed in the XQuartz 'Window' menu), it seems that the document window opens ok but outside of the visible screen area ("lost" in-between Spaces) - possibly due to a known conflict of X11/XQuartz with OS X 'Spaces' when used with multiple screens: The recommended workaround for now (until fixed by Apple): Turn off "Displays have separate spaces" in Mission Control if you need to use X11 across multiple displays (requires a reboot).

What could contribute to the known XQuartz problem: Documents saved in Inkscape as 'Inkscape SVG' file (the recommended default) do store the screen coordinates for the document window position and size in the file. When reopening such a file, Inkscape by default will attempt to open the document window with the same screen position and size as it had when saved (this behavior can be changed in Inkscape's preferences by the way). It might happen that the file was saved while the Mac used a different monitor setup then at the time the file is reopened, and the screen coordinates retrieved from the Inkscape SVG file might represent a location not reachable due to above mentioned XQuartz conflict (with default System preferences for Spaces in Mission Control).

<off-topic>Re-installing is sort of a Windows Voodoo which usually doesn't achieve anything, at least with self-contained and fully relocatable application bundles as used on Mac OS X (unless you had intentionally edited e.g. a shell script or an internal config file inside the application bundle, and need to restore the original version).<off-topic>

Ah yes - I was using a dual screen set-up - it was 'lost in space' - found it now. Many thanks for that
