Combining text boxes as text

Postby DK77 » Mon Jan 03, 2011 7:29 am

Hi all!

I'm in the process of moving from Illustrator 10 to Inkscape, because AI10 doesn't work (for me, at least) on Windows 7, and because I like Inkscape better... but... I have a lot of files that were created with AI that need to be imported. For the most part importing seems to work well, but I have a lot of files with a lot of text. When Inkscape imports a file from AI, it breaks the text up into many individual blocks, making it time consuming to select and mass edit text on the page. All that to ask:

Is there a way to combine text boxes as text? I can select a few text boxes and Ctrl-K to combine, but that will turn the text into shapes. I need to keep the text editable. I would do it manually with copy and paste, but I have a lot of files to convert. :(

Any help is appreciated, thanks! :D

Hi. Go here and log in (greate account if you haven't).

Then go ahead and submit a bug report. But remember to attach the original illustrator file you created (or some sample file that act the same way in Inkscape).

That's the only thing I can think of right now.

Well, I was hoping someone else would answer this, because I'm not sure.

Ok first, when you say many individual blocks, do you mean it's divided by sentences or paragraphs? Or otherwise, how many blocks (roughly) and how small?
Do you know if this is expected behavior?
Or maybe ~suv knows if this a bug or just status quo? (It seems like odd behavior to me.)

Other than cut/paste as you mentioned, I can't think of anything that will bring all the text into a single block. With other objects, Group can be used to accomplish a "mass edit". But for Text objects, it apparently doesn't work. (Actually I wonder if this might be a bug, as well?)

I've run into situations as well (not from converting from AI though) when I wish I could combine smaller blocks of text into one large block, without having to manually edit such as cut/paste. I wonder if this would be worth a new feature request /wish list "bug" report? Or whether it would best be accomplished with an extension? Maybe ~suv, would you comment? Or maybe there's a way to do this, that I haven't learned yet?

I'm sorry I can't be more help DK77 :( Maybe someone else will see the topic though, since my reply will bump it. It just really seems to me that there should be a way to do this.

Same happens to me when I export from Mathematica to SVG.

Combining text boxes into a single text box will be a very nice feature!!!

cheers,
Felipe.

When importing a PDF exported from LibreOffice (an imported Word document if that makes a difference), too.
