[solved] stroke width vs circle width

Postby brynn » Wed Apr 30, 2008 9:05 am

Hi Friends,
As I continue to play with Inkscape and learn how to use it, I've just noticed something I don't understand, about stroke width and object with, in this case, a circle. I can make sample images if necessary, but don't think I'll need them. But if I'm wrong, let me know and I'll upload some samples.

Here's what's happening:
I make a circle, and set the stroke to 5.000 px. Then I want to make the circle a certain size, let's say 20 x 20 px. But if I look back at the circle's stroke width, it's changed to 4.78 px, or something like that. So I go back and reset the stroke to 5 px. But when I look again at the size of the circle, now it's 19.84 px. And I go back and forth, resetting the stroke width and circle width, and I never can get it so that the circle is the width I want while its stroke is the width I want. After many repetitions, I can get them pretty close, but never exactly like I want.

So I've play around with it some, and I notice that any time I make a circle bigger, the stroke width increases as well. And if I make a circle smaller, the stroke width gets smaller. And likewise, if I make the circle's stroke's width larger or smaller, the circle's width gets larger or smaller.

It seems like a circle's width vs the circle's stroke's width are relative, rather than fixed. I'm guessing this has something to do with Inkscape being vector-based? And therefore I'm guessing it can't be changed. But I have to ask -- Is there some way to fix a circle's width, or its stroke's width, or both, so that I can make a circle the size I want with the stroke the width I want, and so that I can change either the circle's width or its stroke's width, while the other remains unchanged? If not, how does one achieve a certain size circle with a certain width stroke?

Thanks for your help and your patience.

Yup. When you have :tool_selector: selected you will see a small group of buttons on the right of the tool control bar. One of them will toggle if the stroke will scale with the object or not.

Oooohh! I see them now. They're so tiny, it's easy to miss them, lol. At least they're tiny in my v .44.

Btw, I'm glad to see v .46 is out. Maybe I'll DL it tonight!

Thanks for your help microUgly!

Wow, you're going from 0.44 to 0.46? You'll going to be overwhelmed by the number of improvements and new features :)
