In case someone else was wondering the same, it seems that the last version to work with Win 98 is 0.42. Some sources claim it's 0.45 (e.g. cnet), but having read the News section, I think this is unlikely.

I can confirm from the release notes on the Wiki that support for Win 98 stopped with 0.43 - there was no mention of reintroducing support in later versions. So you are correct - 0.42 is the last version to run on 98.

yeah, for gtk related reasons we had to stop supporting 98 when we did the 0.43 release.
