Hi.
I want to ask why inkscape works like a snail. When i want to run inkscape i must wait 30-40 seconds, opening some options windows takes 5-10 seconds. When i drawing some pictures i experiencing real horror. On 0.46 everything was fine - it's all began when first 0.47 beta was released.
My hardware - HP Compaq Evo n610c and Fedora 13. It's not hardware fault - like i said, on 0.46 everything was fine. Inkscape 0.47 r22583
Why Inkscape have so terrible performance?
Re: Why Inkscape have so terrible performance?
There is a bug about long opening time due to a lot of fonts on the system. Do you have a lot of them?
I only experience the long opening time, but otherwise it works nicely (ubuntu Karmic).

Re: Why Inkscape have so terrible performance?
No - i have only default system fonts.
Re: Why Inkscape have so terrible performance?
Can you tell us which options take a lot of time? Do you have a system monitor somewhere on the panel so you can see when you choose an option if your CPU or memory are under strain?
What exactly processor do you have and how much L2 and L1 cache do you have? How much RAM?
Different application versions can consume different amounts of resources, more features are added...

This options + maximize Inkscape after start takes long time:
Pentium 4 mobile 2GHz and 512MB RAM. But not hardware is the problem. Inkscape + web browser + internet comunicator + tray apps takes no more than 320MB RAM, so we still have free memory. I've used Inkscape on AMD Athlon X2 4200+ (two cores 2.20GHz) with 2GB RAM and i've had this same issue. Two diffrent machnes - one problem. It's hard to draw something. Two days ago i draw this: http://jusko.deviantart.com/#/d2qy0d2. Technically it is simple picture, but when i try to modify the nodes of bezier curve...i lost my nerves. And when i use some of filters...horror - really Inkscape slideshow.
Re: Why Inkscape have so terrible performance?
Yes, rendering filters is known to be slow. That's why a new mode was implemented to disable the filters display so it doesn't slow you down (look for it under View menu). I suspect that the dialogues you were opening aren't the problem, you probably had some filters on the drawing so rerendering the screen was slow.
Can you try again to play with that drawing but in No filters mode and see if it changes anything.
I don't know how this can be speeded up, probably only accelerated graphics hardware can help because filters are very complex maths and it just takes time to calculate. Filters have always been slow, even on 0.46, maybe you didn't use them as much then? If you need a more convincing answer I guess you better email the dev mailing list.

Re: Why Inkscape have so terrible performance?
It's not filters problem. I try to say, that almost whole Inkscape works little slow, especially this two options, even when im not drawing. Maybe you have right and e-mail to dev-team is some solution.

You could also search around at Launchpad, the Inkscape bug tracker, for more info.

Re: Why Inkscape have so terrible performance?
Inkscape have so terrible performance because you ram suck.
Inkscape doesnt need a graphic card, it doesnt need a processor (it helps with filters ofc and renders), it only needs ram ram ram ram ram ram ram ram.
also, the latest version sucks.

So you sat that 2GB of RAM on my other machine is still not too much for Inkscape...? I've submitted this bug few days ago, but no response.

I've submitted this bug few days ago, but no response.
You may not receive a reply for months. It's just the nature of development, that the developers can't address every single problem right away. I've submitted bugs that sat there for almost a year with no response. And when I finally did get a response, it was just to change the status of the bug from 'Unknown' to 'Confirmed'. People WILL read your message. And those who work on performance issues will test your problem based on the description you have given them of your system and your problem. If they can reproduce your problem, then it is confirmed as a bug, and then I assume placed into some order of priority. (Performance has been a long standing issue, and I think I read somewhere that certain rather major changes are planned to address it. Not sure when, but think I read it on Inkscape Wiki site: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape
On the other hand, I've reported bugs to this forum, and had a developer see the message, and within just a week or 2, have the problem fixed in the dev version. (This was about Snapping.)
Unfortunately, I suspect your issue won't be a quick fix. But definitely don't give up on it. Keep searching Launchpad for other related issues, and if you find any, be sure to add a comment and a link to your bug. Any help you can give them is appreciated, even though they don't have time to say thanks. And btw, if you can use Google to search Launchpad, you will have much more successful searches. For some reason the native search engine isn't very good.
Maybe our resident "bug expert", ~suv, will see this and be able to offer some guidance?
Also, please read these topics for more info on bugs and development.
