When importing an image, I use to get the dialog box to popup to select embed or link, it no longer appears and I dont see where to activate it or deactivate it. Any ideas on whats going on, a bug, how to fix........?
I have noticed since it has been gone the pass day or so, seems like some other things arent working properly as well. Just uninstall and reinstall or is there an easy fix Im not seeing?
Thanks for any help.
Im on Ubuntu 14.04.03 - Kernel 3.19.0-49, Inkscape version .91
When importing an image, no dialog box appears any longer
Re: When importing an image, no dialog box appears any longer
Even though the dialog is not appearing, is the file imported anyway?
Can you elaborate on "other things aren't working properly"? Details will help us understand what might be happening.
Exactly what process are you using to import? (File menu > Import, or Import button on the command bar, or other way?) And actually, that brings up a thought. If you're trying to import an SVG file, it will only open it. Typically what people import are raster format images, such as JPG, PNG, etc. What is the format you're trying to import?

Re: When importing an image, no dialog box appears any longer
Last day or so, I have noticed a bug here and there on the drawing canvas, commands dont want to work properly, union, difference, besier pen snapping a line across the canvas when im using it for no apparent reason etc..Sometimes I slide the drawing away from those areas then sometimes they work.
As far as the importing, I am using File - Import, dialog box opens, I scroll to the folder and click on .png file I want. A dialog box use to open for Embed or Link and now nothing. It drops the image on the drawing canvas, which is another issue that brought this to my attention. I cant use Object - Mask - Set either.
I did take a look in the extensions error log and here is what it listed;
Extension "Dia Input" failed to load because a dependency was not met.

Re: When importing an image, no dialog box appears any longer
Oh no, that error log won't help with this. It's for problems with extensions, but you're not using any.
When you say Union or Difference doesn't work properly. Again, details will help. Please give specific steps for us to try and reproduce the same problem. Also details about the results.
Do you have Snapping enabled? Perhaps it's either not needed and can be disabled, or you want to use it but it could be configured better.
Ok, I got lost there. You import a PNG, and it's on the canvas, but you never got a choice about embed or link? And then somehow that reminds you that you can't use Masking. Again, for the masking problem, please give us exactly the steps you take, and describe the unexpected results.
At this point, I don't think you need to uninstall and reinstall. Until we can get to the heart of what's happening, there's no reason to think reinstalling will help.
I just tested importing with 0.91, and for the first time, I noticed there's a "Don't ask again" box, which you may have checked. See attachment. I'll research how to undo that.
Meanwhile, there are a couple of extensions which might come in handy. If you select the imported image, and look at the status bar, it will tell you whether it's linked or embedded. Extensions menu > Images > Embed, if you want to embed it. Or Extensions menu > Images > Extract, if you want it linked.

Re: When importing an image, no dialog box appears any longer
Ok, look at Edit menu > Preferences > Bitmaps > Ask about linking and scaling when importing.
If it's unchecked, try checking it. If it is already checked, I need to research further

Re: When importing an image, no dialog box appears any longer
brynn, thank you so much. I dont recall ever clicking on Dont show again, but maybe I did by accident?
So one last thing, if Im not using any extentions, then why is there errors in that error log? Kinda weird since I didnt install any except the ones that came installed.
If the others keeps up, ill take a screen shot of it or record or what ever I need to do and show.

Re: When importing an image, no dialog box appears any longer
That log shows errors for everyone. In a brand new installation of Inkscape, that log is there, and full of errors. I think it may be more of a remnant from years past, perhaps whose time has passed. Although that's just my impression.
The only time you might need that log, is if you tried to use certain extensions and they didn't work. Then you might go searching what's wrong, and that file might be helpful.
Basically, what it tells you is that certain extensions require certain other programs which you have to install, before the extension can work.
