Please pardon my ignorance, just signed up to Inkscape and see people asking how to install Inkscape. Why install? Is it different to just signing in after registering?

By installing Inkscape, the installer (the program) take care of the following things that you - comparet to just unpacking the files from a 7z archive:
Those are related to Windows, but I guess it also applies to other OS in a similar matter.
Have fun using Inkscape
- Register the SVG file type, so that you can open an svg file directly from explorer. It get the well known black mountain/pencil icon and description so that you will imeditiately see that the file is related to Inkscape.
- An icon on the desktop will be created, and it put a link somewhere in the start menu (for those that have it and choose to spend time to find it there).
- Inkscape will be in the list over installed programs and it will be possible for you to uninstall Inkscape.
