Downloading previous Versions

Postby chocwrap » Thu Jun 22, 2017 7:11 pm

I've had several issues with Vers .92 and now I'm wanting to revert back to a previous version.

I've tried saving a template (and eventually found out where to put the template. Why do Windows hide files!!)
Part of it saved but the most annoying part - saving the measurement to Pixel and not mm - did not.

Sigh, so I thought it would be easier to go back to a version that behaves itself better.

Any thought on where I can find the previous versions? I've looked on the main Inkscape page but only the current one seems to be available.

Thanks, C

Yes, it's easy to find and download older versions. There's a section on this page about previous versions. Where you go depends on which version you want. https://inkscape.org/en/download/

But I'm curious what you mean about templates and not saving the measurement. What kind of template and what kind of measurement? Did you already confirm that it's a bug? If so, then we don't need to worry. But if there might be a bug that hasn't been reported, it would be good to gather enough info to report it. Or maybe there's a solution or at least workaround?

Doh! Thanks Brynn. I thought I'd had a good rummage around on the site.

I created a template - loads of threads on here on how to do it and I saved it into: appdata\inkscape\templates\default.svg.
I got rid of the page border, changed a snapping option and changed the unit measurement from mm to pixels - all on the Doc Properties window.

When I opened a new Inkscape doc all the changes had been made except the unit measurement on the Tool bar was still set at mm so that hadn't saved.

I didn't confirm that this was a Bug - to be honest I'm not experienced enough in using Inkscape to know if it's operator error/ignorance of if something just doesn't work. But I love the programme..

I'll make a test in just a minute. But meanwhile, I'm curious.

When you open the custom default template, check and see it it's still set for pixels in Document Properties. Also, note that there are 2 places to change the units on that Page tab of Document Properties. One of them is to set the units for the page size (roughly halfway down the page). But to change the units everywhere else, that's at the top, called Display Units. Sometimes people are confused about that.

I use a custom default template myself, which is set to pixels. And I have not seen this problem. But I made the template years ago, with a different version. So I'll make a test with the current version.

Interesting.....

The new default template is saving the pixel units just fine. But for some reason, it's not retaining the 100% zoom!

Does anyone know any reason why it shouldn't save the zoom level? I wonder if I should report that?? Maybe I'll ask on the user list.

The unit for the measure tool is part of the user configuration for that tool - like e.g. the stroke color for the rectangle tool. It is not defined by the document units. It might make sense to ask for a change there in a feature request.

Measurement tool? I don't think that's what she's talking about.

But in any case, when I double-click on the Measurement tool, I don't find any way to set units (in the same way as for stroke color). The Measurement tool doesn't seem to have any style, like most of the other tools do. (0.92.1).

In the preferences file, it does. But yeah, it might not be what chocwrap means.

Off topic:

The setting must be buried somewhere else. Attached is what I see for Measurement tool in Inkscape Prefs. After a little browsing around, I don't see anything else that might apply to that tool. Could be somewhere unexpected?

In the preferences file. preferences.xml, to be even more precise.

Sorry folks - notifications on the thread seem to have gone haywire this end.

Brynn - I didn't realise that there were 2 places on the Doc Properties you had to change. I think that's a bit confusing. Will do this on a new doc template and report back.

For clarity - I want to be able to work in Pixels automatically when the new doc opens and not have to change it from the default - mm - each time. All the previous versions seem to have the default as Pixels and I forget each time I open a new doc and start creating...

Footnote 1 hour later: New template saved and so now Pixels show as the measurement when I open a new doc.
Thank You Brynn - you are so incredibly helpful here on the Forum (especially for non technical folks!) xx

Yes it is. It's only because we've seen other users stumbling there, that made me think it might be the problem. (A lot of new work is planned for the interface, in the near future. So I'll try to remember to mention this, if I have a chance.)

I'm glad everything worked out.

Btw, you have the best avatars! This new one and the old one both make me smile :D

Edit
Actually, I don't think both of them need to be changed. I think you actually could have your document units set differently than the page size units. But it's probably a good idea to have them the same.
