Do you like new 0.91 version share thoughts

Postby nihon94 » Thu Dec 03, 2015 2:36 pm

Hi,

I had been using Inkscape older versions and recently re-installed 0.91 though there are some problems but still found it is fast in rendering.
But when I use Colors I think the older versions got easy and simple methods while 0.91 with new features is little bit un easy.

Just to remind I still can not see the fill in fields of Height/Width therefore using Transform/scale. Also my fonts name/size etc is not visible in 0.91 version. (My OS Windows Vista 32 bit Japanese)
On my computer so far only version 48 worked fine.

Thank you :D

I find the 'Text and Font' tool very annoying.
When you open the font window and skip through your fonts, the window jumps up and down and changes size.

Also V0.91 doesnt work with external font managers anymore (you could use these to install a font temporarily). So you have to install every font to your system, which i definitely wont do.
Instead i have to decide what fonts might be needed for a project im working on, and later uninstall them.

On the whole I like 0.91, but I'm still using 0.48 for my day-to-day work for two main reasons:

* It's the default in my Linux distro, until I upgrade next year.
* I really can't abide the operation of the space bar in 0.91, and find it seriously slows down my workflow.

As an aside, I also hate on-canvas editing for gradients, and would rather use the old dialog despite its limitations, but I guess I just have to accept that it's going away completely at some point :(

Even worse: working with text is essential and fixing this feature should be easy.

Good you can use 0.48 and 0.91. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Not sure how but on win if the spacebar is not hold down but pressed fast it works as before -like click vs click drag-.

Gradient editing on canvas is something I couldn't get used to, couldn't add step by double clicking on the gradient handle.
With the add new step icon it can work as before.
BUT now you can link gradients when edited, while previously if you moved the gradient's steps you created a new def.
(Sadly unused gradient defs are still the number one cause of crashing.)

Are you on trunk, or a development release? I think there's been a bit of a tweak to the behaviour on the dev version.

The big problem, for me, is mostly when gradients are applied to small objects (something that happens a lot in my Greys comics). Having to zoom in enough to work with the gradient stop handles means that I can lose the bigger picture, and no can longer see the object in context. For me it made more sense to have editing of the details of the gradient separate from the display of the gradient on the object.

On Inkscape 0.91 r13725, win 64bit build.

As a workaround you can draw a larger rectangle on canvas temporarily and edit the same gradient fill on it.

I know how to work around it - but I prefer the other workaround of the "Use legacy gradient editor" checkbox in the Preferences. As I said, I just have to accept that it's going away completely at some point, but thankfully we haven't reached that point quite yet.

Oh :D I just noticed about Greys comics you talked about.
I use a Japanese software ComiPo (Japanese version) but thinking to try Inkscape too. :D

Off topic:
Actually I have three comics, all created with Inkscape to some degree (and created in conjunction with a friend of mine - he's the real artist, I just write them and muddle along with Inkscape as best I can):

  • The Greys - Sci-fi parody strips. Created 100% with Inkscape, plus we make the original source files available for download on our website. Every strip also includes at least one Easter Egg, most of which are found by opening the source file and poking around in Inkscape a bit. These strips make a lot of use of gradients.
  • Monsters, Inked - This was created as a humorous newspaper strip. The artwork is drawn by hand, then traced, coloured and lettered in Inkscape.
  • Elvie - This strip appears in Linux Voice magazine each month, and is a humorous strip about Linux and Free Software, usually centred around one of the articles in the magazine. These are drawn using MyPaint, with Inkscape used for the layout and lettering. The source files for these can be very big, so we host them on GitHub for anyone to download. They lag a few months behind the printed versions, so that the magazine has a period of exclusivity, but all the source files are made available eventually.

We always wanted people to be able to download our comics and learn from them (or modify, or translate them), so we chose to use open formats and Free software where we can, so that we don't impose any financial barrier on people's ability to change them.

The Greys, in particular, has been translated into a variety of languages. If you're interested in translating any of them into Japanese, I'd be really pleased to hear from you, and help out in any way I can.

Hi,
Thanks a lot for sharing info and for the translation. I wish I could do some translation but I am sorry time does not permit me. I am extra occupied at present may be later.
I checked the links you provided and got surprised that such beautiful space craft etc. were made with Inkscape.
