Help cutting a "circle" image

Hi Guys & Gals,

Siffing through tutorials etc, and I've figured out a lot of things but the final thing I'm struggling with seems on the face of it the easiest thing but I cant fathom it out. I've created a new design, and need just the circle image out of the attached (I coloured in red what needs to be removed/made transparent). I've tried the cut tools then aligning it up but I never get a full circle due to all the pixels I'd be here for a month of sundays editing 1-by-1 if I did it "my way" >.<

Could someone please show, or edit the image so I just have the contents of the circle? Any help is much appreciated.

Is this a vector image you're working with? It's a little confusing when you say "I never get a full circle due to all the pixels". Vectors don't have pixels until you export them in a raster format (in Inkscape's case, that's generally a PNG file).

Did you create the image in Inkscape, or did you trace something, or what? Can you give a little more info?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I created the original image in Inkscape, then saved and imported in paint to try and make the background (red part) transparent due to me assuming my paint skills were superior to my Inkscape skills (totally wrong assumption, im horrendous at both). I've since made the 'background' red, then re-imported the image to Inkscape to see if I could try to find some sort of circular cut tool which would solve my issues, but this either doesn't exist, or there is an easier way to just cut the background out/contents from the white circle inward. If this makes sense.

Left two other messages, but it seems admins here take a while to authenticate a reply... in the mean time I've realised Inkscape is garbage for what I require, so I've used GIMP and sorted my issue in <20 seconds, where I spent around 4 hours trying to sort this through Inkscape.

Just in case anyone else has this issue, use GIMP instead...

Well, there was only one other message awaiting approval, so I don't know what happened to your second one anyway. The very small number of moderators on this forum approve posts as soon as we see them, but we're not on here 24/7.

Anyway, have fun with The GIMP. But for what it's worth, in Inkscape:

1) Draw a circle covering the bit of the image you want to keep.
2) Select the circle, and the background rectangle.
3) Right-click, then Set Clip.

This assumes that there is a white background rectangle that needs clipping. More likely from the design I would guess that File > Export PNG Image is all that you need, and that you've instead been using Save As with a format of Cairo PNG (which doesn't support transparency).

I think it´d be better to upload the original Inkscape file - as we can get rid of the "red" instantly in Inkscape - really no need for a GIMP call.

Familiarity is the issue here, not the toolset.

Gimp is a great tool... That said, vector is the way to go for logo design.

Many of us here use both Gimp and Inkscape, for the things they are best at.

Check out the built in tutorials and other resources like youtube Inkscape videos by Nick Saporito... there are fine logo tips there (even if some of the work is quick and not overly precise).

In case you decide to try Inkscape again....(because good luck drawing that logo in GIMP or Paint)

Inkscape's background is transparent by default. You didn't need to make it red, to identify which part you wanted to remove. It was already transparent.

Inkscape does offer the traditional checkerboard background to indicate transparency, if you prefer it. Personally, I think the checkerboard makes the image hard to see (impossible to see, in many cases). But if that's what you were looking for, to indicate transparency, you can enable the checkerboard in File menu > Document Properties > Page Tab, near the bottom.
