Hello,
I have recently started using the Inkscape (version 0.91) but I've encountered such a problem that it again makes me think of some other alternative to Illustrator.
The thing is that almost every time I am trying to import an image file (.jpeg, .gif, .png etc.), the program suddenly stops working with the usual window popping up which is "Trying to find the solution.." and ends with a complete shutdown of the Inkscape. I have tried everything from rebooting the PC to re-installing Inkscape, but the problem keeps occurring almost every time I am trying to import something, which in conclusion already made me lost hours of work, as I (before this damn thing started happening) didn't tend to save my work every 5 minutes and when the problem occur, I automatically loose all the unsaved data and I have to turn it on again and start from the beginning (or a save I've done half an hour ago).
I think You can imagine how bothersome this is, especially when I am using it at work and am expected to provide results within the given time frame.
Does any of You encountered a similar problem? Do You have any ideas about why would it do this every time? I, myself, can't find out anything as I've tried everything I could think of already.. well maybe besides a complete re-installation of windows, but I'd rather avoid that if possible.
Thanks a lot for any ideas.
EDIT: I have found out that the error occurs only if I am trying to import a different picture format than I did before. (So if I import two .jpeg pictures in a row, it works. If I import a .jpeg and then .gif, it crashes.)

Re: Windows 10 - Inkscape stopping working all the time.
How large is the image you're trying to import?
How large is the file that you're importing it into?
How much RAM do you have on your computer?
This sounds suspiciously like a performance related issue. Inkscape uses primarily RAM, especially for importing a raster image. And if the open file is already using all the RAM you have available, when you ask Inkscape for more (by importing more kb or mb) and it's not there, then what else can Inkscape do? Maybe not crash, but if this is an extreme case, crash is not unusual.
Of course there could be some other problem. But this is a place to start.

Re: Windows 10 - Inkscape stopping working all the time.
System info would be helpful: ram, processor, graphics/display adapter.
Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: Windows 10 - Inkscape stopping working all the time.
The images are rather small (< 500kb).
The error occurs also when I am importing into a blank page.
I added my new finding into the EDIT section of my original post. It a good thing I found this out as now I only have to always first open the picture in Paint and save it under the same format as pictures I imported before (quality of picture itself isn't the issue for me), but anyway it's an extra thing to do which I would rather avoid.
You can check my PC info in pictures attached. Thank You very much for replies and Your willingness to deal with this with me.

Thanks for the thorough reply.
Please post a screenshot of the import dialog panel when you initiate an import (has choices for link/embed, default rez, etc.).

Might be related to this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1322889
Preferences-panel>Interface>Windows may provide clue in the choice of "desktop integration".
Selecting GTK can cause instant crash.

Re: Windows 10 - Inkscape stopping working all the time.
This is a known bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1467103 - it has been resolved in the development version only 20 hours ago.
If I read the info in the report correctly, this will not happen with the 32bit Windows version (but not sure, try it out).
To resolve, either install the linked development snapshot in the bug report, or maybe it will also work okay with the 32bit version.
You can help Inkscape development by trying out the development version and adding a comment about if this solves it for you to the report.

And activate autosave in the preferences to prevent any data loss: Edit -> Preferences -> Input/Output -> Autosave.

Re: Windows 10 - Inkscape stopping working all the time.
That bug (1467103) must be only in Windows 10. Because I can't reproduce in Windows 7 with Inkscape 0.91, 64-bit.

Re: Windows 10 - Inkscape stopping working all the time.
I can replicate in win8.1, using a .bmp file and a .jpg file.
No error message, just closes Inkscape.
