I am using Inkscape version 0.46 and 0.47 and I found this bug. When you import an SVG file into another SVG file, the new file size increases with any additional changes (whether adding/removing lines or any other objects). Worse, the file size remains even I removed everything! I have a file with a couple of lines only and it is 1MB, can you imagine that?

The SVG file was fine before the 'import'. Meaning, if I removed lines or objects, the file size reduced appropriately. It misbehaves only when I import other SVG in.

I use 'import' frequently because I drew a couple of templates to be reused over and over in my projects. Is there anyway to avoid this problem.

Try running the Vacuum Defs option under the file menu.

If that doesn't help, maybe post your file here so the XML can be examined.
