safe an image created in Inkscape

Postby BJscaper67 » Sat Mar 14, 2015 5:11 pm

Hi there,

I would like to know how to safe an image created in Inkscape so that no one else can alter it. Another question I have is why in 0.91 you can only Export in PNG and no longer in other formats?

Thanks,

BJ

Hi.

Svg is as open as possible.
Preventing alteration can be done by limiting other users (?) to open them in their fullness.
Here was a topic on making forms that others could fill in the given fields but not modify.

What else?
Not much.
Even if you only have embedded raster images in your svg, they can be edited out, but at least they cannot be edited as vectors.

Not indestructable either, but you can lock layers and objects to make it "harder" to alter.

Another idea is to give a totally mixed up structure to the file, that would make it useless for modifications.
Like, pdf-s can have text objects split to parts and use random kerning, which make it almost impossible to handle at times -so one needs to retype it.

Well, there's currently a long discussion underway (over the last week or 2) on the dev mailing list about the difference between Export and Save As, and how Inkscape should respect that difference. So many messages, that I haven't even read them all. And many I can't understand anyway (hah!) So it's a bit of a loaded topic.

Anyway, the old name of Export PNG Image was Export Bitmap, which was confusing, because a lot of people thought it meant export BMP. But it only ever exported PNG. Anyway, that's how Inkscape converts to a raster format, and it seems PNG is the only raster format Inkscape can create.

However, using Save As, you can convert to MANY other formats. Try File menu > Save As, and look at the Save As Type dropdown menu.

I don't think there's any way to make any image in a way that someone with a graphics editor can't edit, in some way. If your concern is preserving your copyright, you'll need to look in that direction, to protect your property. (e.g. adding a watermark, or license, or etc.) If your concern is to prevent accidental editing, you could lock everything. Although note that anyone with Inkscape can just unlock them, if they want to.
