? about adding fonts to inkscape

Postby Vince » Sat Dec 12, 2009 7:41 am

How do you go about adding fonts to inkscape. I have a program(disk) with 1000's of fonts and would like to add them so I can use them in inkscape. If I use the program it will add the font to the pc's font folder but it doesnt and wont add it to inkscape. Is there a way to manually add the fonts that I would like to use? Im very new to this so this may be a dumb question but thanks for the replies. Vince

Add the fonts to you system (Windows, Mac. etc.) and the next time you start Inkscape, it will have them. If you add 100's, the first time you show the list of fonts it may be slow, but after that it won't be too bad. I'd be selective at first.

I even restarted the pc and it didnt transfer. I only sent one font just to see if it worked. Any other reason it may not find it?

This is on Windows? If so, first go to Control Panel -> Fonts. Can you see it in the list there? If so, Inkscape should see it, too. If not, the font is not installed correctly.

Thanks for the replies. I added 20 more fonts off the same disk and everything went fine. Only the one font that I tried first still doesnt work(I guess there is something wrong with it and it just happened to be the one i was trying to use to see if I was doing it right before adding others). Thanks again appreciate the help. Vince

I would like to add additional fonts to my inkscape,
but I m not sure were a good source would be.
Free ones would be more desirable.

There are loads of free font sites, e.g., dafont.com and 1001 Fonts .com. Google for others.

MyFonts and Fonts.com are probably the main sites for commercial fonts.

For fonts that I only use occasionally in art programs and which I don't want to load onto windows permanently I use The Font Thing and/or Font Viewer.

I like the font thing best but it's very old and I have to run it in compatibility mode.

With either of these I can keep my extra fonts in a folder in my documents and temporarily load which ever I want to use.
Once they are loaded and I open Inkscape they appear in the font list.

I find this really useful as if I had all my fonts loaded all the time they would clutter the list far too much.

Thanks for the leads.
Im not sure what you do to put them in the box in inkscape.
Buy the way i noticed two areas of fonts
1 when I have written something and I go to text another box opens and there is a list of fonts there
2 on the main screen there is a list there as well
were do the ones from the outside source go?

Download them from the site, and install them on your computer. Then they should be available next time you start Inkscape.

How to install fonts on your computer depends on what operating system you are using. For example, on Windows XP you can go to Fonts in the Control Panel, then use Install New Font on the File menu.

They should appear in the same place as all the rest once you have installed them.
