SVG to PDF

Postby alivetu » Thu Feb 07, 2008 8:00 pm

Hi everyone

I've just updated inkscape on my kubuntu to v0.45+0.46pre1.

I want to use the 'save as pdf (using cairo)' function but i have a BIG problem : my pdf file size is 14 Mo !!!

When i use this code, the pdf is 1.8 Mo :

rsvg file.svg file.png
convert file.png file.pdf (imagemagick)

My file.svg size is 168 ko...

I've tested with different options in the insckape 'save as pdf' window but same result.

any idea ?

I just started playing with Inkscape, generating graphics to be included in LaTeX documents. The question PDF or EPS comes up almost immediately.

The first difference I noticed is the impossibility of embedding fonts in Inkscape's PDF output. When saving as EPS, there is a choice.

Is there a change in .46 in this regard? Both output quality and size suffer without the embedded fonts.

I can't comment what the developers might be doing to address these issues - I recommend reporting it to them directly viewtopic.php?f=5&t=484

But as a work around for lack of embeding fonts in PDF, I would suggest converting text to paths. I can appreciate that this may or may not be appropriate in your situation.
