I draw with a tablet in inkscape to export to a cutting machine.
As I draw by hand not al my lines are continous. I'm having a problem with filling areas with colour.
Eg today I drew some shapes. Eg a square. It took four different lines so there is no 'object' to fill. I selected all our lines and pressed union which seemed to join them and then I could fill
I then drew an hour glass shape without a bottom, about 3 diferent liens. When I select these and press union, because they don't join all the way around, it creates new lines in the shape of a triangle to join the end to the beginning. All I want to do is fill this shape but can't
Bit of a hard one to explain...

Hi.
One way would be, to select all intersecting paths, convert strokes to paths (Ctrl+Alt+C),
add them together (Ctrl++), then break apart and delete unnecessary objects -and combine the others if necessary-.
If you do this on duplicants of the original paths, preferably make the outline widths thinner before converting strokes to paths, in the fill and stroke panel (Shift+Ctrl+F), then move the fill object to the bottom (End).
If those lines drawn are not enclosing an area to be filled, then there is not much option you can do.
Here is a rough way to solve it:

Re: Bit of a hard one to explain...
It all greatly depends on which tool you`ve used. Freehand or perhaps Calligraphy? (F6 or Ctrl+F6) Both of these tools have their own options and you`ve skipped to tell us which one you were using (i.e. for Freehand - which shape, for Calligraphy - well, it has a bit longer toolbar,)
If you just want to draw shape(s) and fill them, you`ll need at least a closed shape(s). Otherwise, how and by what criteria should Inkscape determine what exactly do you want? Unlike the radio and some cars, Inkscape does not contain little people inside.
