Recover a corrupted file ?

Postby Amber » Thu Jun 29, 2017 8:04 am

Hello comrades

One of my precious work in progress can't be opened anymore with Inskscape. Probably due to a too full-hard drive or maybe a sudden computer stop, the file looks like damaged.

First, it was a "preferences.xml" error. I deleted the .xml files, as recommanded, and the error message turned to "Failed to load the requested file".
I tried again after downloading the latest Inkscape version (0.92 for x64) but it only opened a blank file.
Opening it with Wordpad I get a huge block of code that I cannot understand. Opening it with LibreOffice Draw I get "General Error. General Entrance/Exit Error". Opening it with Microsoft Word I get "Incorrect character found. Location: Line: 87 Column: 943478."

I don't get how the Line/Column system works, is it possible to fix the .svg file only by removing some altered parts ? Or is the file too damaged to be recovered :'( ?

Thanks a lot if you some motivation to help me :) !

The .svg file is too large for attachment, but I'll update it if needed.

Host it at dropbox or your favorite host,
I'll have a look at it.

How large is it ?
When you open it with wordpad does it start with "<?xml version="1.0" ? [good]
Does it have non printable (=garbage) when viewed in wordpad ? [not good]

Check your settings in Edit > Preferences > Input/Output > Autosave.
[if you xml settings were discarded there are chances it was disabled]

The weight is around 12 Mo. When I open it with wordpad, it indeed start with <?xml version = "1.0" .....> :D
It shows clean code for the first 100-200 lines and then it become messy, like: "
xlink:href="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAADJIAAAhvCAIAAACx4NK+AAAAA3NCSVQICAjb4U/gAAAgAElEQVR4 nOy9244kSZIldkRE1dwjMqu6e4b7GQT4yP//Cr4TJECAnOmqzAg3UxU5hw9q7uGRlcXZJna5g+Xo Q8DD3ExNL6JyPSJu/9P/+D//fdze5tFgvXeFN9i1jK1NVnJ6i9YcyZrThOqNOR22NTeLY1YJBvco hzX3HhvMbuOYldHbpW9jDEmtNUnHcYT55XLBcaQgOMMiwswAghXR55xVMyIiAnDJBDvGO4DmFhEm 5ThImhlaB2AWZiYJAAAzw8Ur1ay5O2uaGM2qMvy1aiLn5uGvV75cMBHfj/f5u2SCrwYjQDOQZmZu zd2rlGJEbNuWOSSZmTsyMzPNrPfu3jKzqgBIJikiWmskAUQEgDlyDd4s0Pbw7t4ky8zMsYaqacKE VXiP2AxhLvNUvVgE3ErFmqAa1MwHVdBaATMDUDUzc0oONVgYzIwweLNosnyJHsSkKkzhkpwKZclk
"

"Autosave" was disabled, I enabled it, but I don't really get the point of that.

Thanks a lot for your help !

I'm afraid there's not much to be saved. The file ends abruptly in the middle of a large image.
Before that there are some definitions of rect and layers but not more.

You should update your Inkscape version (the file was created with 0.48.2, according to its contents, we're at 0.92.1 currently - you missed 0.48.3,0.48.4, 0.48.5, 0.91, 0.92...)...

0.92 fixes an issue with Inkscape not saving files properly when you close the program while it is still writing the file, which is probably the cause for the data loss.
Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!
