There are extensions for what you're trying to achieve, and also SVG filters.

But you can also do it yourself. For a shadow duplicate the object (Ctrl + D), turn it's fill and stroke colors to black or gray, blur it (Fill and Stroke dialoge), shift a bit to adjust for the light directions and send it back behind the original (PgDn or End).

It's similar for inner glow only remove fill and color stroke with the glow color, blur it and adjust the stroke width, in the end clip with another duplicate of the original to remove "outside glow".

You solved it? If you did something other than what prkos suggested, I would be interested in what you did to solve it. Would you mind sharing what you did? Attaching a short SVG image example here would also be nice. (Interesting that SVG files don't display here the way bitmap graphics do... does the forum software need a patch/update? in any case, SVG images can be uploaded and viewed locally.) We are all about sharing the knowledge here.

First click "Quick Reply" then click "Full Editor" at the bottom. After the screen reloads, you will see a tab below the text entry box that says "Upload attachment." Click on it. That is where you upload. And while you are typing, you can select "Place inline" while editing and it will place a link there like this one:

symbols.svg

An interesting thing about that radiation symbol... I couldn't find one on the interwebs so I had to make that one from scratch. But since Inkscape offers incremental rotation, I was able to create accurate rotations with ease. That was key in making that symbol. Once I had one of the three 1/6th circle parts, I set the rotational axis to the middle of the screen, duplicated and then rotated the duplicate into place using incremented rotation to click it into place accurately. Repeat one more time for the third. Now I have a simple SVG version of the radioactive symbol.

I long for the day when Google will show me where there are more SVG files to locate but it doesn't index them in image searches yet.

You can use this in a search engine:

But it doesn't show thumbnails of such images which is what I want to see.
