Couple webcomic issues

Postby Guest » Mon Jul 07, 2008 1:30 pm

I'd like to do a webcomic in the style of "Order of the stick" and have a coup,e questions:

What's the best way to do panels in inkscape? Is there a tutorial for this?

I'd like to build a librtary of characters, facial expressions, etc, and just be able to access it and load the parts I need after premaking them. What's the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance...

I haven't seen a tutorial, but this is what I would do...

For the panels, I would create a large white rectangle with each panel cut out from it, kind of like a piece of paper with square holes cut into it. I would then put this object on the separate layer and draw the contents for each panel on a layer below it.

For facial expressions, I would simply create all expressions in a separate file and copy/paste them into your strip as needed. Remember that to copy objects between Inkscape windows both windows needs to be started from the same instance (i.e. start Inkscape using a shortcut, then create another window by using File > Open or File > New).

Panels- (Remember you can do this manually, the align tool is your friend (and secret lover ;) )
-Two minutes into this unrelated tutorial, Richard Querin explains how to use the 'rows and columns' function. You can use that function to set up your pannels.

Library-
-Ok, this is a little tricky. Make sure you're sitting down!!
-Find your Inkscape folder under program files. Goto Inkscape->share->templates
-Ok, you're not actually doing anything here. I'm just showing you that all the things you can select from when you press "new" are saved as templates in this folder.
-All you gotta do is open up Inkscape normally, make a file with all your stuff in it, then simply save it in this templates folder.
-Load the template by opening up Inkscape and selecting your template from the "new" drop down menu.
-I RECOMMEND YOU DO THIS FOR YOUR LAYOUT 8-)
-Don't overwrite anything that you didn't make. :P

**NOTE** It might be better to just several smaller Inkscape files that contain your stock, rather than one big one that may contain stuff you won't need. Either way, In my opinion (edit: and apparently also micro's), it would be better to make a new file, open up the stocks, cut and paste the things you need to use, then close the stocks and work on your strip.
