I have used inkscape on two different Linux systems. Mint and Lubuntu, the program keeps locking up, and no matter how long I wait it does not resume.
There is no particular thing that I'm doing when it locks up. I can be moving an object or typing text, or scaling and all of a sudden it is just not responding.
If no here can help then I'm going to look for another graphics program. I can not continue losing work because this program is unstable. I'm using 0.91 on Lubuntu 14.04.

Any suggestions?

Tips to Avoid Performance Issues

If this is happening in very small files, please post a test file, and give steps to reproduce the problem.

Also, you can set up auto save to help prevent losing work, especially if you don't want to click save as you work. Inkscape Preferences > Input/Output > Autosave

It does not happen with small files. It crashes after many operations, and lately it has been crashing almost every time.

Probably your files are too large for the amount of RAM on your system to handle. The article I linked can give you some ideas to still keep working when slow-downs happen. But after some point, you either need to get more RAM or give up on editing that particular file.

Something strange. I have no auto/save option. I looked threw every preference window, no auto/save.

that is exactly where i went, there is no autosave option there.

Did you try cleanup document/vacuum defs in the file menu?
That was the most common reason in my experience for crashing in 0.48.
While in 0.91 had sudden crashs are more often.

I have not use the document cleanup. Are you suggesting I should, or that was the reason for crashing?

Yes, definitely.

In 0.48 there was a bug where editing gradient steps stored each of the intermediate gradients in the file, resulting in hundreds/thousands of unused defs. Huge factor in crashing.

You need to expand the Input/Output section with the little arrow, sleven7. There's a whole dialog for Autosave.

Do you use the Inkscape version from the ppa? Stable or trunk?
Is there anything it says when it crashes?
Does it make emergency saves (that would be said in a dialog that comes up when it crashes)?

File menu > Clean Up Document will removed unused data from the file. Depending on what you've done as you work, there may or may not be TONS of unused data. So that can help you keep working after you start having slowdowns. That is mentioned in the article I linked. Although when I wrote it, "Clean Up Document" was called "Vacuum Defs". I guess I should edit the article....

Hah! I beat myself to the punch. Apparently I already changed it. It's the first item listed in that article, for what to do when you start to notice slowness.

No there is never a message, just freezes up.
This is a new machine but the last one did the same and I had the ram maxed out, 4G
not sure how much is in this machine.
