Engraving

Postby schoggi » Wed Jul 10, 2013 8:51 pm

Hello I am using Inkscape for cnc engraving Projects.. using g code Tools.. using a path to g code to follow lines... so far all ok...
Now... I want to go further and do the engraving with variable Z axes determining the line width... like tapered lines, bezier curves with rectangle
in or out lines, or for examples Fonts with varying widths.. the engraving section in inscape, extensions is not so clear to me as I wish...
anybody can help me further???
thanks a bunch in advance

Hi schoggi,
You could try posting your questions in the http://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/ forum.
I know some of the members there do engraving and may be able to help you.
Also, if you havent already seen it there is a tutorial link in this brief article http://www.jcopro.net/2011/09/11/cnc-engraving-using-inkscape/
that might be helpful. Dont know if this will be helpful or not, but its worth a look

This bit in particular looks like it may pertain to what you want to do.
Using the Calligraphy pen:
3. Thinning/thickening of paths with Alt

Even with background tracing, the visible lightness/darkness of
a hatching may not correspond too well to your artistic
intention. Also, with guide tracking, the ends of strokes are
often far from ideal - they may be too blunt or have unsightly
bends or blobs. This is where the new thinning/thickening
function is indispensable.

While in the Calligraphy tool, press Alt. You will see a
orange-colored circle indicating the area that will be affected;
this area is 10 times the size of the pen when you draw (so you
can change it by changing the Width parameter on the
toolbar). Now select some or all of the paths (as with most
tools in Inkscape, only selected objects are changed), for
example by pressing Ctrl+A, and start '''Alt+dragging''' over
the paths. Where you touch them, paths become thinner, as if
melting away, up until total disappearance. Conversely,
'''Shift+Alt+dragging''' makes selected paths thicker in places
where you touch them.

good luck
