I used various transparent and blur effects not realising they would not export to a .pdf file but in the end I exported a .png file which was not to big to send to the printer and reproduced fine at A3.

The main image is a scan of a painting done on paper.

It looks good from this distance Exporting as a bitmap is always suitable option so long as you know the size it will be printed.
