[solved] additive or subtractive color

Is there a way to achieve this effect?

or the opposite?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:SubtractiveColor.svg

When I mess with the alpha value of the fill, clearly the entire object becomes transparent so the red becomes pink against the white background, instead of only combining with the other colors.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

In the layers dialog, you can choose a Blend mode. Is that what you're looking for?
