[solved] Problems with exporting as pdf for use in LaTeX

Postby natebottman » Mon Nov 14, 2016 3:45 am

Hello,

I am using Inkscape 0.91 on Mac OS 10.12.1. I would like to export an inkscape file to pdf to use in a LaTeX file. I've done this before with no problems -- just "save a copy" as .pdf, and use the "omit text in PDF and create LaTeX file" option. But this time, when I included the blah.pdf_tex file in my LaTeX file, I got some horrible errors, and I have some idea of what's happening: the .pdf file that gets exported looks correct *except* that the circles in my drawing do not show up. Moreover, when I delete all the circles and try exporting again, my LaTeX compiler has no problem with the blah.pdf_tex file. So the circles seem to be throwing inkscape for a loop.

Does anyone know a fix? I tried exporting to .eps as a workaround, but that had the completely different issue that the text was misaligned when I compiled the LaTeX file.

Thanks!

I fixed it! After some more tinkering I realized that the issue was that inkscape was exporting the circles as one page of a pdf, and the other stuff as another page. No idea why, but I re-made the non-circle stuff and now everything's fine.

Please mark this solved, if you know how (I don't).

Another idea: Does it work if you just convert the circles to paths? They won't be perfect circles after that anymore, because of some Bézier curve restrictions and some 'unclean' conversion in 0.91, but if you only intend to *look* at them (opposed to cut them out and use them as wheels for some kind of machine, or something), then it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't know -- now that I've re-made the non-circle stuff, I can't reproduce the issue. For future reference, how do you convert circles (or other objects) to paths?

Via menu: Path -> Object to Path, or Shift+Ctrl+C - works with circles, ellipses, LPEs, rectangles, stars, text, 3D boxes, and more. Does not work with clones, those need to be unlinked instead.
