Can't pick colour from one bitmap but can from another

Postby anon13 » Fri Feb 13, 2015 11:46 pm

I'm trying to fill a box with a colour from a bitmap that I've imported, but the 'under cursor' colour is stuck on #ffffff. The strange thing is, if I move over to a different bitmap that I've imported, the 'under cursor' colour changes correctly. Is there some error with the first picture or does the picker not work on clipped images or something else?

Is it possible you have a transparent white object overlaying the imported image (which only shows white with Dropper tool)?

Everything seem to be working for me, with the Dropper tool and imported raster image.

Edit
If you still can't figure it out, you could upload your SVG file, and we could investigate.

There wasn't a transparent overlay, no.
I think I've worked it out but I still don't understand why it behaves this way; I import an image and the dropper works fine, but as soon as I clip the picture the dropper tool doesn't pick up any colours anymore. At least that what seems to be happening.....
Thank you for responding and I'm really sorry for my delay in replying.

Hhmmm.....well, even though you've moved on, I'm still intrigued!

I've tried clipping an imported JPG, and doesn't seem to affect the Dropper tool. Well, if you pass the Dropper tool over the part of the JPG that was clipped away, of course it picks up the background white.

But at this point, it really is a guessing game. So it you run into this problem in the future, we will need to see the SVG file, to figure out what's happening. :D

That's interesting, hmmmmm. I tend to use png instead, could that be making a difference?
I've just quickly tried again with a completely new document and different imported image and it still doesn't seem to work.

Working here.

You can't see the dropper tool, but I swear to the vector gods it is positioned over the clipped object.
You can see the status bar.

Please put your system setup (Inkscape ver, OS, etc.) in your signature so we can better help.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Well, I just used a JPG, because was the first raster image I ran into.

The Dropper tool is working just fine for me, clipped or not, in this file. That might imply some preference of yours is causing this. But I don't have a clue what that might be.

On the clipped object, you're mousing over the visible area, right?

....I'm perplexed....

What version of Inkscape are you using? Also, what's your operating system? Maybe a bug, I guess. I'll search....

No reported bugs, although the LP search function is horrible, so who knows, really :(

I'm perplexed too!
I'm definitely mousing over the blue maze bit and it's still just giving me #ffffff.
I thought I'd installed the latest .9something version but it's reverted back to the .4something......actually, I think I have both versions since I have two shortcuts on my desktop. Windows 7, 64 bit.
What do you mean by the LP search function?

Any screen magnifiers? Working at native display resolution? Dual monitors?

Screen magnifiers: no clue so probably not.
Native display resolution: I think so.....
Dual monitors: nope, just one screen.

Are both Inkscape versions showing the issue? Are both 64-bit versions?

LP: Launchpad is where Inkscape's bug tracker is. I searched, and didn't find anything that remotely sounds like this. But their search is so bad, I often can't find reports that I know are there!

Are you using a graphics tablet (such as Wacom)?

All I can think it maybe it's something in your preferences, that we don't have. You can test that by deleting your preferences file. Inkscape will recreate a new default file, the next time you open it. However, as far as I understand, this will wipe out any preferences you have set, and for myself, would be a nightmare trying to get everything back the way I had it before. So for me, that we be a last resort. If we knew what we were looking for, you could just delete that 1 item. But I don't have a clue.

Hi

brynn, instead of deleting your preferences file just rename it, this will "save" your current settings in the renamed file.

example from command line - you can use explorer if that's your 'cup of tea'.

First navigate to your inkscape user dircetory.

cd c:\users\ragnar\appdata\roaming\inkscape

rename the file:
ren preferences.xml preferences.xml.backup_25_Feb_2015

After using inkscape, to get back to status quo - delete the preferences.xml file and copy the backupfile to a "new" preferences.xml file.
del preferences.xml
copy preferences.xml.backup_25_Feb_2015 preferences.xml

Takes you less than 30 seconds to backup or restore. I do this all the time when testing and are never "afraid of loosing" my preferences.xml file.
(Having a backup of the preferences.xml comes in handy when on
startup Inkscape will show you "the preferences.xml file is not a valid xml file" message.
This has happened to me a few times.)

I see the same behave in 0.48. The clipping messes up the transparency values on the dropper tool.
What to try?
Instead of clicking with the dropper, try click and drag a bit. That way the average colour of that area will be set, mostly it works correctly.

Thanks Ragnar. I'll try and keep that in mind.

From Lazur's comment, it sounds like this might be a known issue. And the simplest solution would be to install 0.91.

Brynn: yes, I have a wacom but it does the same thing when I use a normal mouse too. As for changing the preferences, it sounds risky and I agree that it would be a last ditch attempt!
ragstian: that is definitely useful to know, though I'd probably manage to mess it up somehow, so might not risk that either! But thank you anyway (:
Lazur: phew! I was worried that I was being a numpty and doing something silly. Thanks for the workaround, that helped a lot.
The issue doesn't seem to occur in 0.91 so problem sorted, yay. Thank you everyone and sorry for leaving it so long to say so.
