Hi, I'm having a strange problem with the blur effect - I've never seen this before. I found it hard to explain so here's a huge image...
1) This is my problem. There are two shapes being clipped (for no apparent reason to me). The larger one behind is a duplicate of the one in front. The blur
is set to 10% on the small one, and about 20% on the second.
1.5) A closer look...
2) As you can see, blurring with only 4% on the smaller shape does not produce this clipping effect.
3) This is the shape with no blur, to show that the shape itself isn't the cause.
4) Outline mode for same reason.
5) Oops, this isn't included - you'll just have to trust me on this one! This was the exported image (ie the png file) - just to show that it renders WITH the clip, it's not just a visual temporary bug that you can usually fix by scrolling around.
Any suggestions?
[solved] Strange clipping on blur over 4%
Re: Strange clipping on blur over 4%
I don't know why, but I can never get to the inkscape launchpad site from this PC. Even the google cache doesn't work. Anyway, I found this in a Google search, it might have some answers, or it might be your own report of the bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/192063

Re: Strange clipping on blur over 4%
That bug report looks pretty similar although that person's examples are quite subtle in the missing segments, mine is huge!
Thanks for pointing me towards that. I was rather hoping it was something I was doing rather than a bug!

Re: Strange clipping on blur over 4%
so there wasn't a work around provided on that page? For some reason I thought I had seen this before.
Try going to the Inkscape preferences and under the Filters tab increase the blur quality to "Best Quality". It would be strange if this fixes the issue as when exporting to bitmap Inkscape is meant to automatically apply the "Best Quality" setting and you've said the PNG's show the same issue.

Re: Strange clipping on blur over 4%
Just to clarify: Gaussian blur theoretically has infinite extent. Because this isn't feasible to render, SVG limits it to a certain region (which can be specified explicitly in the SVG file, but has a reasonable default if it isn't specified). For heavy blurring, Inkscape doesn't always specify a large enough region, which causes the clipping you see.
Bug reports 168947 and 192063 both cover this (but both also involve separate issues).

Re: Strange clipping on blur over 4%
@MicroUgly: Thanks, I checked and the blur filter was already on best.
@sas: thanks, yeah I saw the bug post about the blur region, but have been hesitant to edit the SVG. I'll give it a try tonight if there is no easy fix. I think I read somewhere that there is a GUI option in the filters dialog to set this region, but I can't find the filters dialog. Anyone know how to bring it up?

Re: Strange clipping on blur over 4%
It's 0.46 feature. You can find it under the object menu.
