[solved] Help cutting paths!!! I just dont get it

Postby Andy » Tue Oct 21, 2008 9:38 am

Hi, this might be way to basic for here, so please dont rouse on me. I am a programmer not a graphics person!

Anyhow, I am trying to make an electronic copy of my yacht club's logo but I jsut cant get it to work for me. I have scanned in the image and imported it as a layer, then I have started creating objects on seperate layers. The problem is for the life of me I cannot figure out how to cut paths. The photo of where I am at is shown. If you think by looking at what I have done that I am never going to get it, then please feel free to tell me!

Cheers.

BTW, I have read many tutorials. I though the gear one was close, but it still did not help me.

Edited: I cannot see the images, so I will post the URL's.

Looks like you might try some tutorials (you can find them under Help) or these great resources:
Inkscape: Guide to a Vector Drawing Program
http://en.flossmanuals.net/inkscape

To me it doesn't seem you need to cut anything, at least not with the objects you have already created. You just need to give them a fill color and order them in the right order.

It's a very simple logo, I think you can get great results using Trace bitmap (under Path menu).

ps I edited your images url, you have to enter the actual image url, not the url of the page where image is shown, right-click on the image to get it, in Firefox it's called Copy image location.

Thanks prkos. The only reason I did not use a fill is because I wanted the logo to have a transparent backround for the website I am designing. I will get stuck into that tutorial.

You want entire logo to be transparent?

If not I guess you only want the area outside of the actual logo to be transparent, which you get automatically when exporting to png because the default bg color of the document in Inkscape is transparent.
But for displaying on a website you have to be careful because IE6 doesn't display transparent pngs correctly (taints them bluish or purplish) so you'll have to convert it to gif if you really need the transparency, but you'll have to choose a matte color for that so it kinda defeats the purpose of using transparency.

Why do you need a vector version of the logo? You can simply resize it using a raster editor (like gimp), you can also make areas transparent with it too.

I wanted the logo to be transparent so I can place it onto a picture. Basically I want the outlines on a picture.

The reason I am trying to convert it to a vecor image is mainly because original image is scanned of a sticker and is relatively poor. It is also not correct and needs some changes. Also I dont like resising JPEG's as there always turn out grainy and look like rubbish.

I did do some of the tutorials already, but they have not quite sunk in yet.

Following prkos' suggestion to use the trace bitmap feature, I got the following result: http://www.petaimg.com/uploads/1224578919.svg
I took away the background (I wasn't quite sure what it was that required removal...)

Here's how to get that result:
- Import image into inkscape, and select it with :tool_selector: tool
- Go to Path -> Trace Bitmap (Shift + Alt + B), a new dialog will open
- Look at the bottom, where there is a section called "multiple scans". Select 'colours' and set the number of scans to "5".
- hit the 'update' button for a preview (feel free to change the amount of scans... although I think 5 is enough)
- also, there will be 3 options near the bottom that are: smooth, stack scans, remove background. Make sure 'smooth' in UNSELECTED, and you can enable the other two.
- hit OK and inkscape will perform a trace

You make a circle, then an oval. Duplicate the oval. Mark circle, then oval, Path: Object to Path;
Mark both, Path: Cut;
The little piece "cut from the circle now lies under the oval, Click repeatedly eith Alt pressed to mark it, then delete it;
Mark oval and the cut circle, Path:Combine;

This for all the ovals and circles. The duplication step ensures that one oval stays at the exact place the cutting took place, because the "cutting" oval will vanish;

Thanks Everyone, I pretty much have it done now!!!! Once I have finished touching it up I post it so you can all grade me!!

Not a bad program I must admit. Seems to crash a bit but other than that I am very happy with it.
