Well, you could use the calligraphy tool, but this would require a graphics tablet and skill with the pen. Are you after setting for the calligraphy tool?

Alternatively, I would simply draw the shapes you see using the pen tool. Most of those leaves a exactly the same shape. Draw a couple of variation and clone or duplicate them many times. The same could be done for the bamboo sticks. Just draw a couple and use it over and over.

If you get the setting right, yes you could do what they've done. The bamboo might be a bit tricky but should be possible. But a pressure sensitive tablet is a must. It's the only way you're going to be able to control the thickness of the line well. Although, if you clever enough you might be able to do it with a mouse and the arrow keys (which can adjust the pen thickness as you draw).

The Chinese/Japanese (excuse my ignorance) text should be a cinch.

If you haven't already seen it, here's a great tutorial on using the calligraphy tool - http://www.inkscape.org/doc/calligraphy ... raphy.html

The tutorial doesn't mention the (relatively) new feature which for me made InkScape into a tool worth having: there's a very small button on the toolbar (to the immediate right of the numbers and such) that enables tablet pressure, and for bamboo-brush type calligraphy I'm pretty sure it's essential.

I usually use the calligraphy pen with "fixation" turned about to zero, which makes it behave like a round brush.
