I am having trouble copying from document and pasting the copied object(s) into the new or other document. I did it once but have not been able to do it again. I am on a Windows Vista machine.

If you're using version 0.46 you can only copy and paste between same Inkscape instances, meaning when you open one Inkscape window you need to open the second one from the first one (File > New for example) and not from the desktop icon or programs list.

This has been fixed in the development builds.
