Creating Swatches rasterizes my Vectors!

Postby Chantella » Fri Jul 29, 2016 12:56 am

Hello everyone,
I'm new here and judging by my question, you'll soon figure out I'm new to Inkscape too!!

I've read through a bunch of Inkscape manuals and done some tutorials and have been using this wonderful free program for about 4 months now, but I'm stumped when it comes to creating swatches. I understand that I have to select the object and/or stroke and click on the 'Swatch' icon in the fill and stoke dialog, then choose 'Auto Palette' to see all my saved swatches.

However the problem is that once I've created the swatches, my file is being rasterized when I convert to EPS and reopen the EPS in other software. I need to create the swatches and have my work remain vector (for microstock sites).

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me :-)

I can't give you a definitive answer, but I have a hunch: the SVG format doesn't include swatches in any form, so Inkscape fakes them using single-stop gradients. Unfortunately gradients aren't supported by the PDF export option, so they get converted to rasters.

Using normal (i.e. non-swatch) fill colours should avoid the problem - though you obviously lose the advantage of an automatic palette of used colours.

Note that if you use the eyedropper on an object filled with a swatch, it creates a non-gradient duplication of the swatch color. Maybe that can be useful?
Have a nice day.

Hi tylerdurden,
I tried what you said, but the swatch still reads as a linear gradient! It would've been ok, but microstock sites frown upon inkscape gradients :-( Sigh...

Do you need to provide the swatches, or just a document made with the swatches?

The swatch will not change, nor will an object filled with a swatch. But if you create a swatch and fill an object with it, you can use that object and the eyedropper to to fill the objects used in the document.

Maybe this is not gonna work for your application, but at least you can get the idea.

Once you have the solid fills in the document, you can delete the extra objects that have swatch fills.

Hmmmm.... if you click the eyedropper on a selected swatched filled object, the object's fill will change to solid from swatch. :!:

So, no need to have extra objects... maybe a way to do the whole document automagically... an extension perhaps.

Maybe the process could be speeded up by something similar.

Hi again,
Thanks a lot tylerdurden for all the help! Seems like these swatches have a mind of their own :-( About whether I need the swatches or not, I think I need to create the palette so that potential buyers of my vector don't have to lose their minds in case they need to change any colors in one go.

Lazur, thanks - will try what you suggested.
