Once I made a test on what can be achieved with saving as pdf and what not. I remember that using gradients and such things in the masking objects doesn't work.

Well, PNG is a raster format, so you probably won't be able to do much with it in Illustrator. And if all you needed was a PNG, you still could use Inkscape. What has the PNG to do with converting SVG to PDF? Plus, I don't see any mask in your PNG (or what was a mask before you rasterized it).

Well, I was just thinking it might be more helpful to upload the PDF, so people could test whether they could open it in AI.

To be honest, I was really confused about your message. Assuming the canvas/editor that we see in the PNG, is the AI canvas/editor/window (I've never seen before), it appears that your technique was not successful, because the editor is empty -- no image in there. So then I thought the SVG that you convert to PDF was originally an image of a blank AI canvas/editor/window. But if that's the case, I can't find any object in there that looks like a mask, which was the original subject of this thread.

So all in all, a lot of confusion. Now that I understand why you posted the PNG, I think a better response from me would be: It looks like it didn't work, because the canvas area/editor/AI window appears to be blank or empty. So it seems like it didn't work after all?
