Really!? The process for selecting ALL objects is identical. You select :tool_selector: and click on the shape (or click-n-drag a selection around the shape.)

ok, maybe i didn't figure out how to select a square. i don't think i figured out how to select anything. i've opened a jpg that i want to crop. so i tried to select the area of the picture, but i keep selecting the WHOLE picture. i just can't figure it out.

Inkscape is a vector graphics editor, not a bitmap editor. You shouldn't try to edit JPEGs with it - that's not what it's for.

For editing bitmap files (JPEG, GIF, PNG, etc.) I would suggest the GIMP.

You could in fact do that in Inkscape: start by drawing the button shape over the JPEG, then select them both and clip (Object -> Clip -> set), and continue from there.
