Problem creating halftones / Create Tiled Clones - Trace

Postby rimau » Mon Oct 17, 2016 6:28 am

Hi all,

So I'm having quite a problem here... I'm trying to create halftones, nad no matter what I do, all I get is weird results. I have checked various tutorials, I have tried with both bitmaps and simple vectors, with not even a single success so far...

Using a simple gradient creates this for example:

I am using the latest stable on Windows. Is there anything I can do to acctually get the halftones effect or is that a bug that needs to fixed in future releases?

Hi.

Remove all transformations before the tiled clones.
Like, draw a new layer and make the tiled clones on it or something similar.

(Page resizing added that transformation that messed up your image.)

(Should be fixed in the next version)

Any idea when that might be? The Next Release info on the site looks like it might be rather sooner than later, but do you have any more precise info?

It's really hard to predict the release dates, and they always take more than anticipated. But for this specific issue you shouldn't wait for the new release to fix it, as it's easy to make it work if you just pay attention to some details.

Simply draw the object you want to clone right where you want it to be (top left of the gradient), don't move it to there, create it there, and then use the Tiled clones dialogue. This way you get predictable results for clones positions.

If you're getting a weird scattered position pattern when you shouldn't, it means that the object you cloned already has some transforms written into it, but they aren't deleted or calculated, instead they interfere with the clones functions.

Hi prkos,

I did try that and it didn't help. I have:
1. set the document size to 200x200 px
2. turned page border snapping on
3. created a 200x200 px square, perfectly aligned to the page
4. aplied a simple B&W gradient
5. created a black circle using snapping to corner and Ctrl for perfect proportions
6. used the tiles tab

and the results are still a complete failure :( there was not a single transformation used in the process, the setting is the most primitive you can imagine, so I guess I do have to wait/rely on other tools

are you sure you are using the feature in 0.91 on Windows?

  1. ensure transformations are set optimized in the settings (it is by default)
  2. convert objects to paths -no circles or rectangles- (Ctrl+Shift+C)
  3. get rid of any grouping (Ctrl+Shift+G)
  4. select both paths and cut (Ctrl+X)
  5. create new layer
  6. paste in position (Ctrl+Alt+V)
  7. create tiled clones

Check this topic for an alternative workaround.

I have followed the instructions but what I get is all the dots duplicated line after line on top of each other. So visually it's just a single line of dots, but if you start deconstructing it, you will find multiple dots duplicated on top of one another.

Then maybe you need to tweak the tiled clone's settings as well?
Default settings should produce objects next to eachother.
P1 symmetry, 0% shifting -probably you had set -100% shifting for y?

For the tracing effect you will need to add "unset" fill attribute to the parent and set the tracing in the right part of the panel accordingly.

Rimau the issue seems to be the changing the layer size! When you changed the document size it included a transform on the layer, and it's interfering with the clones positions. Can you do the tiled clones first, in a new document, and then change the document size?

I know this can be annoying, I've dealt with this myself before but you can work around it. I'm glad it's been fixed and we can look forward to the new version.

Not touching the layer size didn't help. Something is clearly wrong. And to be honest, if the feature to be used requires everyting to be "sterile" it is not really useful in regular workflow. I guess I will have to wait and turn into other solutions now like raster filters in GIMP or online converters.

But I will be definitely checking on the feature with the next release.
