How do I make elliptical arc curves?

How do you make elliptical arc curves in Inkscape? Presently, when I type "a 20,20 0" and press ↵, I get something really weird as a result. To be more precise:
M -9.7442702e+154,5.9664476e+138 C -9.7442702e+154,2.6908059e+154 -7.562941e+154,4.8721351e+154 -4.8721351e+154,4.8721351e+154 C -2.1813292e+154,4.8721351e+154 -10.217268,2.6908059e+154 69,37 L 22,37 C 9,30 -7,46 26,40
I didn't write this myself!

I have no idea what those numbers mean. But you can draw an elliptical arc with the Ellipse Tool :tool_ellipse:

Could you be more precise on where you enter those numbers, and when the last time was that that gave you an elliptic curve / ellipse?
