SOLVED: Problems manipulating text (rotation, kerning, etc)

Postby robertjm » Fri Sep 07, 2012 6:33 am

Hi all,

I'm new to Inkscape and have been using the book Inkscape Essentials to learn how to use the program.

One of the problems I'm having is trying to manipulate text. It worked earlier today, but now not so much. And for the life of me I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I start with a new canvas and select the text tool.
My text is set to 56 and I type in several words.
If I highlight some text I can change all the spacing settings just fine. However, I seem to be unable to rotate the text, or set the kerning. What I also notice is that the far three settings (horizontal kerning, vertical shift and character rotation) at the top bar are grayed out, and cannot be adjusted either.

Is there some other setting I'm missing that has to be done to manipulate the text, or does my computer have an intermittent problem?

Using Fujitsu AH531 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit w/16gb memory.
Keyboard is set to English so keyboard mapping is normal. Has both left and right ctl and alt keys. and a 10-key built in.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Robert

Hi,

I think you're talking about the difference between just Text and Flowed Text. AFAIK, you cannot use manual kerning and rotation on a Flowed Text -- you first have to convert it using the menu Text → Convert to Text. Does that solve your issue?

Thanks!! Found that out last night after doing a bazillion Google searches, but couldn't find a way to pull back the posting.

The main different was simply clicking on the canvas and then typing text (non-flowed) vs. Drawing a text box like you do in GIMP (flowed).

Still learning

(is there a way to mark this thread as SOLVED, or do I should I just change the subject line? I know some BBS mark things as solved as an indicator for others)

Marking a topic solved is not required in this forum, like it is in some forums. That's why there's no automated way to mark it solved. But if you want to, just locate the Edit button for the first message. There you can edit the topic title by adding "solved" to it.

If you wanted to delete a message after posting it, there's an X button right near the Edit button. But if a reply has been made, please don't delete it :D

Thanks!!

I think the problem was that I couldn't see the post yet because it was still waiting to be moderated.

Later,

Robert

Oh yes, you're right. If you haven't reached the moderation requirement, you won't be able to delete it, until it gets posted. :D
