I also wanted to know other peoples sorties about the reason you chose to use inkscape.

Oh, that's awesome, because we like answering questions, lol!
When I first started to learn computer graphics (just as a hobby) I installed GIMP. I struggled mightily, especially with line drawings, for a few months, before someone suggested Inkscape to me. I looked into it, but found very little info. So I had to install it, and just try it. Within like 5 minutes, I loved it. And with Help menu > Tutorials > Basic, I found it easy to learn. I still needed help though, and was frustrated that there were no forums where I could ask for help. All I could find was the bug tracker which was at SourceForge back then. I had been thinking of setting up a forum separate from SourceForge, and asked them about it (along with a couple of newbie Inkscape questions). And that's when someone directed me to this forum, which was only a few months old. I was thrilled! So I've been here every since. Now, I actually can answer more questions than I ask, lol

Do you have any of your work posted on here? Maybe a really old peice and then something more recent.

Wow! Thats insanely good! I don't think I have that kind of patients lol, I'm still getting used to the program and use it for just basic graphic design. Illustrator has been my program for years but I want to do something different and I'm getting in to the open source thing now. Using these open source programs is basicly appreciating the creativity of the programmers, its just another form of art and design plus I think its cool because its got its own subculture.

But there are many more talented Inkscape artists than me. You should look through the Finished Inkscape Work subforum. There are some awesome photorealistic works there, and some awesome cartoon work as well. For cartoon work, check out Dillerkind's Pool topic. For photorealistic, search membername "snel". I'm not sure if it's "he" or "she", but whoever it is, they do amazing realism work!

Subculture? Really?

Yea it seems like the open source world is kinda like an art and design subculture. You don't agree? Was that offensive?

No, no, not offensive. I just didn't understand what you meant. I'm not that familiar with programming, which leaves me pretty much clueless about open source, except for the general idea. I do understand that Inkscape and GIMP are both open source, and I think maybe Blender too. I guess I have heard people say that they like that open source trio. And I've heard some artists say that they like using only open source programs. I just didn't realize there was a subculture.

But there are all kinds of open source projects, besides in art/design. Like if I'm not mistaken, isn't Firefox an open source browser? And I have an open source calendar. Notepad++ is open source, isn't it? I think that open source is not limited to art or design or graphics.

But I can see how artists could prefer open source, because open source allows any user to report bugs or request new features. It offers a little more control and input than proprietary programs. So that makes sense

also when i talk about art and design im basicly saying that programming (which i know nothing about at all either) is art in itself. programming in any open source program is pure design all the way. when people program they "design" the program based around the user and their interaction with the program. kinda like a person designs an advertisement, they are thinking about their target market and design for them.

and the sub culture thing is kinda like being a car guy. there are cars everywhere and you prob pass 100 a day if not more, just regular everyday cars but there is a huge car subculture car shows, car clubs, gumball and poker runs, auto cross, drifting... the car sub culture is huge and very divers.
